Book Description

“I Am Just A Woman” gives a first-person account of domestic violence, marital rape and child sexual abuse. The book challenges society’s question of “Why does she stay?” by taking the reader on a page-turning journey inside the experience of a survivor. I have just one hope for this book: that it can help another person out there, a woman who is, or has been, in the situation in which I found myself back in 1983.

I am just a woman. There is nothing particularly special about me. I’m not rich or famous. I haven’t had a brilliant career. I haven’t made a name for myself in any way. The words people use to describe me are “brave” and “strong.” Over the past few years, as I have come to understand my life’s experiences, I have learned to hold on to those words. They are meaningful to me. If I had the choice between being “rich and famous” or “brave and strong,” I would choose the latter.

But in the end, I am just a woman. I know other people have life-changing experiences every day. We read their stories in the paper and online, and we see them on TV. My story hasn’t appeared on TV or in the newspaper. And I haven’t spoken about my life with many people. But the experiences I chronicle here not only changed my life, they changed me.

This ws a gripping book which told a quite harrowing story from th point of view of a woman who was raped on her wedding night and later her child was sexulally abused from the age of 2 til 11 and she had no power to stop this happening as the courts ordered her to allow her ex husband visiting rights. Thankfully there have been improvements since this happened over 20 years ago. The book details what was going on in the woman's mind and how she coped. Brilliant and inspiring

5.0 out of 5 stars Very gritty 28 Jan. 2013

A gritty autobiographical account of one womans journey through domestic violence, how I love the conclusion when she leaves and grows free. The facts of courts and child-protection opens the door for the truth as this woman struggles to stop contact with the childs father through the courts, like so many have. Finally she breaks free of him for good. I am happy for her. A must read to show there is hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars So incredibly gripping! 5 Jan. 2014
Although I have witnessed domestic violence as a child, later to become a victim in my adult life, I never have experienced anything of sexual abuse or had my own child abused. You are an incredibly brave person and your strengths have clearly rubbed off on your daughter. So 'Lucy Johnson' you are not 'just a woman' you are an incredible, strong, brave and wonderful woman who suffered a terrible injustice by not only the man who should have loved you but the system around you too - but you've done yourself and your daughter proud. Well done and I hope your marriage does succeed you deserve to be happy - as for 'Mark and Lydia' - karma comes in many shapes and sizes - I just hope it comes bigger and badder than ever for you!
