Product Description

Everything changed when Laura turned thirteen and her father developed Alzheimer's disease. She became the perfect caregiver daughter. She literally and figuratively became her dad's caregiver. Just ask anyone who has ever known her, especially her schizophrenic mother. Laura devoted her life to taking care of her parents, even when it meant the loss of her own hopes and dreams.

But as she matured, Laura decided it was time for her to reclaim her life. And she did so by setting off on a journey to gather the shattered pieces of her past so that she could forge a new future.

Detective Liz Roberts, whose problems also include being abandoned by her birth mother, is assigned to a case when a confused man is found alone, wandering around the Big Fresno Fair, unable to tell anyone who he is or where he came from. The only clue to his identity is a piece of paper in his pocket that says, “My name is Larry.” As Liz uncovers his identity, she also begins to uncover long-kept secrets.

Meanwhile, an upcoming family event may force the detective to face her own painful past.

an unexpected twist 27 Feb 2012

Laura takes her father, who has Alzheimer's, to the fair, a few hours later he is found wandering around alone. Detective Liz Roberts is tasked with finding out how he came to be alone and where Laura is. Everyone who Liz speaks with says what a loving daughter she is, so why isn't she returning any of the detectives calls about her father?

This book was different than I was expecting it to be, despite having read the blurb. I felt like the middle part of the story, when Liz is trying to find Laura, was a little slow and possibly could have done with being a bit shorter, as the reader you don't really feel like masses is happening. However then the book took a twist I completely wasn't expecting and I felt like the momentum of the story quickly built up.

Overall I think this was a good story, the characters were well developed, it was well written and the twists at the end change everything you think you know about the characters.

A good read.

Pleasantly surprised 24 Nov 2011

I have to say, I have been jaded about books for a while.. Nothing has caught me in a while. Then I downloaded a sample of this book, not quite knowing what to expect. I tore though it in what seemed like five minutes. I was captivated. Needless to say I bought the book. The story line just seemed to draw me in.. A woman leaves her ailing father at the Fresno fair. He has alzheimer's disease and can't remember his own name, let alone know how to get home. This book shows a portrait of an elderly man, whom at first seems friendly and genial, but a much darker picture develops. I finished the book within a few hours (pesky work got in the way). This new author captivated a jaded avid reader. I hope to see more from her.

White knuckles, wide eyes and wee hours of the morning! 4 Dec 2011
By Trent Goodbaudy - Published on Amazon.com

The Dutiful Daughter was a great story that was written wonderfully and meticulously. The story envelopes you and sets the hook right away, and then keeps reeling you in by giving you little clues as to where the story is headed as it builds to the 'insane' climax that you will never even see coming. This book is not only extremely entertaining, but very suspenseful all along the way as well.

Trying to figure out what Laura is going to do next and following Detective Roberts as she works and eventually cracks the case was engaging and addicting, and the explosive secrets that are revealed when the detective finally catches up with Laura makes the entire journey extremely satisfying.

I really like that the story is set in places that I have actually been; such as Fresno, Pismo Beach, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Yosemite, even Hearst Castle (I am from Huntington Beach myself, and it was fun to be taken by the author to places I am familiar with).

Another thing about this story is you never know what is going to happen next. I was trying to get Laura figured out and I couldn't even really make sense of what she was doing until the last third of the book. Her father's character has Alzheimer's; her mother was in and out of mental hospitals for schizophrenia and threatening her daughter with a knife while growing up. You just never know (until later on) how deep the insanity is rooted, and how much she is affected by it.

You can tell that the author has plenty of experience with people that have mental issues, and not only that but you could also sense that they also had an insider's knowledge of how other institutions and organizations are run as well. This gave the story a practicality that made it feel more real than many other stories I have read.

I give it 5-stars because this book satisfied my craving for a riveting read and I even estimate that it was SO good that it is in the top 5% of all the books I have ever read as far as keeping my knuckles white and eyes wide in the wee hours of the morning (and I read A LOT of books).

A Gripping Story 27 Nov 2011

I did not know what to expect when I purchased this book...but I was drawn into the story right away. The descriptions were so vivid, I could see the characters and the scenery in my mind as the story continued to unfold. I was surprised as the author continued to take me through the twists and turns and secrets...a gripping story I could not put down!
