Dementia is a term used to describe any condition where a variety of different brain functions such as memory, thinking, recognition, language, planning and personality deteriorate over time. Dementia is not part of normal ageing. Everyone gets more forgetful as they get older that does not mean that they have dementia. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer s disease, but there are several other types. There is a lot of myth and misinformation about dementia. This book is intended for anyone who has, or may be worried that they or their family and friends have, dementia. It is also for people who live or work with someone with dementia. About the Author
Dr Nori Graham BM, Bch, FRCPsych, DUniv is Emeritus Consultant in the Psychiatry of Old Age at the Royal Free Hospital where she was responsible for many years for a community-oriented multidisciplinary service for older people with mental illness. She is currently Mental Health Consultant to a large care home in Clapham, London. She was the National Chairman of the Alzheimer s Society for England from 1987 to 1994, and Chairman of Alzheimer s Disease International (ADI), the umbrella organisation of national Alzheimer associations worldwide, from 1996 to 2002. She is now Vice-President of the Alzheimer s Society, England and Honorary Vice-President of ADI. In 1996 she was awarded an honorary doctorate for public services by the Open University. Dr James Warner BSc, MB BS, MD, MRCP, FRCPsych is a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry at St Charles Hospital, London. He works in a team providing community assessment and treatment of older people with mental illness and dementia. Dr Warner s academic interests include teaching, evidence-based psychiatry and research into dementia. He is the author of over 50 scientific papers, several books and book chapters. Dr Warner is a member of the old age psychiatry section committee of the World Psychiatric Association, medical adviser for the charity For Dementia and sits on the executive of the Old Age Faculty of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

I am a carer and wanted to increase and update my knowledge on the disease so I found this book online. It is so easy to read and understand, very helpful and it is hard to put it down once you start reading. Great layout and very clear text and diagrams. Overall very pleased with my purchase and would advise any one looking at this book who is interested in the topic to get it. Great read :)

This book is a good straightforward guide for anyone who suspects or knows a loved one has dementia. It takes the reader through descriptions of the different forms of dementia with fairly detailed descriptions of the symptoms, then describes how diagnosis is performed, and the treatment options. There are chapters on how to get help with care, and also how to deal with being a carer, and the future prospects of a dementia sufferer. There are several diagrams showing how the brain works and how it is affected by the different dementias.
The book has been written by GPs and I found that the subject was dealt with in a somewhat detached way, however, I think some readers may prefer this approach as they are coming to terms with the situation. I also found it interesting to see the disease from the GP's point of view.
There are some basic tips for dealing with a dementia sufferer, but there is little detail in either understanding what your loved one is going through or for your approach to care. There are very few case histories. I would suggest it as a book for someone who is concerned about dementia, undergoing diagnosis or has just had a diagnosis confirmed.

Bought this book with three others having been a carer for two years and got very frustrated with insufficient information and help from the NHS and Social Services. If you're a carer, I would also recommend the books Keeping Mum and The Selfish Pig's Guide.

The book is precise and straight to the point; with no jargon or long, confusing chapters. Exactly what I needed to help me increase my depth of understanding of the condition before writing a nursing dissertation about the disease.
