Product Description

Synopsis

Of the great figures in 20th-century architecture, Alvar Aalto is in many ways the most humane, and the most relevant to both contemporary sensibility and the future. This is a comprehensive study of an innovative, prolific master, whom Frank Lloyd Wright called a genius. Fifty of Aalto's projects - houses, town halls, cultural institutions, factories, furniture and glass designs and regional plans - are illustrated and described here, using previously unpublished and newly photographed material. Accompanying a centennial retrospective exhibition, at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in February 1998, the book offers an examination of the architect's work and influence in essays by five notable critics and historians. Essayists include Kenneth Frampton, Pekka Korvenmaa, Juhani Pallasmaa, Peter Reed and Marc Treib.

Peter Reed's book is an interesting contribution contribution to the understanding of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto's work. Indeed, his book goes well beyond a simple and tedious expose of Aalto's work but digs deep into the concepts and philosophy behind his creations. Furthemore, the author concetrates on the vary wide range of buildings the architect is responsible for, and not just the public buildings he is best known for. He even devotes some of the book to furniture and design. Peter Reed's book is also well documented and researched as well as comprehensively illustrated. All this makes for a very good book, which I would recommend, although its price is a sizeable inconvenient.

More than just the standards 27 July 2000
By Nancy L. Dowd - Published on Amazon.com

This is a fabulous book for real students of modernism. This monograph goes beyond the handful of buildings we're used to seeing by this great architect. Aalto appears to be getting his just rewards these days as more and more of us return to his work.

aalto is the master, and this book prove it. Now days with the sustainble issue everywhere this architect raises from the grave, almost a century ahead of his time the finland master takes over with the holistic aproach to the discipline.
