Product Description

The Anker® Uspeed hard disk external storage enclosure for 2.5" SATA HDD/SSDs transforms your disk into a convenient and protected external hard drive. The durable yet lightweight aluminum alloy enclosure offers USB 3.0 and eSATA interfaces for fast data transfer. Tool-free installation allows fast and easy installation and swapping, and since the drive is powered through USB cable, there is no need to plug into an external power plug.

Features
Supports HDD: 9.5mm & 12.5mm 2.5" SATA-I, SATA-II, SATA-III/SSD (SATA-III limited by eSATA cable to 3Gbps)
Output Interfaces: USB 3.0 + eSATA; Soft blue and red LEDs indicate idle and data transfer states
Specifications: 132 × 90 × 18.5mm, 190g, Aluminum alloy & plastic materials
Powered via the provided USB power wire, not via the eSATA cable; no external power plug necessary

Note
* The eSATA cable only serves data transfers and will not power the hard disk.
* SATA-III drives are supported for data transfer, but the eSATA cable limits transfer speeds to 3Gbps.
* Your drive cannot be accessed via both eSATA and USB 3.0 ports at the same time. If both are connected, only the eSATA-connected computer will be able to recognize and interact with the drive while the USB connection will only be used to supply power.
* For large data transfers, please connect the USB 2.0 plug to your computer to ensure sufficient power supply.
* The Toshiba MK1234GSX hard disk is sized differently and does not fit our product. Please do not buy this product if you own a Toshiba MK1234GSX hard disk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicely built and fast assembly 14 Mar 2013
By Andy_atGC TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Size Name:USB 3.0 & eSATA to 2.5-Inch SATA|Verified Purchase
I have assembled several portable hard drives in a variety of enclosures, most of which were in the past and either USB 1.0 or USB 2.0. I have installed a few in USB 3.0 enclosures and all appear to be more substantially built than the older versions.

Anker may not be a widely-known name but I have used a small number of their branded products and found them all to be reliable in use. Some have been HDD enclosures and they proved better and consistently more reliable than those of another popular brand renowned for similar products.

This enclosure is slightly different from other USB 3.0 enclosure for 2.5-inch drives in that it offers eSATA and USB 3.0, the former by a standard connector and the latter via a micro USB 3.0 connector, which is far from being non-standard as another reviewer appears to believe. In fact, of several pre-assembled USB 3.0-enabled 2.5-inch hard drives I either own or have used and several more that I had assembled in third-party enclosures this is the connector seen in all. Both cables are provided and are of a reasonable 1 meter length (or close to it). The USB cable includes a short additional power lead (a Y-connector) to provide the extra power needed if your machine's ports provide slightly less; using both connectors in adjacent or nearby ports will remedy the deficit.

Assembly is simple in theory and requires no tools. To open, press and release the catch at one end and a hinged flap falls open. Align the drive's power and logic connectors with those of the case and drop it into place. A plastic insulating sheet is included to protect the exposed circuitry of most traditional HDDs although it won't be needed for many SSDs (other than those not encased).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great item well worth the price 17 Feb 2013
Size Name:USB 3.0 & eSATA to 2.5-Inch SATA|Verified Purchase
I have had problems with a few USB 3 Enclosures where you need to leave them at a certain angle to get them to work. So I purchased this hoping for a more premium item and I have not been disappointed. It is a solid unit and maybe a little bit heavy. But the USB 3 connections so far seems rock solid and the ability to pull the leaver and swap disks out without any tools is great. I am very pleased with this purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money 25 Aug 2013
Size Name:USB 3.0 & eSATA to 2.5-Inch SATA|Verified Purchase
After inserting the hard drive the case didn't want to close. Eventually I got it to close by pushing the lid in, holding it and then fiddling with the release button and pushing it across. Fiddly and should be unnecessary. Poor build quality.

Initially the product worked and I was going to award a 3 star in this review. Basically because it worked but it was poor build quality. It then just stopped working. I tried it on several different PCs. I reinserted the drive. I tried USB 2 instead of USB 3 (USB 2 did nothing at all), where as USB 3 at least tried to work!

I've given up on it. Between shipping abroad to where I live and the cost of the product I've wasted around 35 GBP. Save your money and buy something else.

Edit 7 Oct 2013 - Just add that Anker have been very proactive in trying to deal with the defective product. They have now issued a full refund. Whilst the product was poor in my opinion, their service has been excellent. I would consider buying from them again as I now know they will try their best to fix any issues that might arise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but room for some improvement 22 Mar 2014
By Myatu
Size Name:USB 3.0 & eSATA to 2.5-Inch SATA|Verified Purchase
After reading some of the negative reviews regarding the build quality, I was a bit wary of what to expect. However, I decided to purchase this item anyway as overall the feedback seemed positive and I've had good experience with Anker so far.

The first impressions when I received the item were good. The packaging didn't seem excessive, yet gave the impression of a quality product.

Inside the box were the usual items as described in in the product specifications: the HDD enclosure, an eSATA cable, a USB cable with a double A connector (one is only used for supplementing power), an instruction manual, a product feedback card and a protective film that can be attached to the bottom of the HDD.

The HDD enclosure felt heavier than I had expected - particularly the thickness of the metal case impressed. Other HDD enclosures I have used in the past felt "cheap" because a lot of plastic was used or thin materials. This product felt more solid.

Opening the HDD enclosure was straight forward. Simply push down on the locking button and slide it to open it. The button does not protrude too much, and it felt that there was sufficient spring force behind it to prevent any accidental opening of it, for example whilst transporting it.

Included in the box was a protective film, presumably to protect the exposed board at the bottom of the HDD. This part was not mentioned in the instructions of the installation manual. It was also not immediately clear if this was a "sticky" piece of plastic or not, as there were no tabs to help separate it with ease. After some prying at corners, it revealed itself as being a sticky film indeed, but I chose not to stick it to the underside of the HDD, but to just slide it between the HDD and the case instead.
