Book Description

28 Oct 2013
Over the years the motion picture industry has (sadly) gravitated to generating poorly cropped and heavily airbrushed posters that rely far too often on celebrity head shots. Thankfully, an underground network of graphic designers and artists has reinvigorated the art of the movie poster, crafting stunning pieces for classic and cult films. Here is the first comprehensive look at the movement, presenting this eclectic and dynamic medium through more than 200 eye-popping posters from over 100 cutting-edge artists, coupled with fascinating commentary and behind-the-scenes information. These new, underground posters have quickly become the most coveted by ardent moviegoers; they are typically produced in very limited runs, sell out within minutes, and command upwards of several hundred dollars each. With a smart, fresh visual perspective, alternative movie posters celebrate classics like Star Wars, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining as well as cult favorites: The Big Lebowski, Blade Runner, and Pink Flamingos.

As usual I received this book for free in exchange for a review. This time it was from NetGalley. Despite that kindness I give my scrupulously candid thoughts below.

In general I'm not a fan of coffee-table books because I hate nothing more than dusting coffee-table books. This one caught my eye, however, because it has a delightful artistic feel to it and I was, for the most part, not disappointed. This book contains about 200 "alternative" movie posters from classic movies ranging from Pee Wee's Big Adventure to Hitchcock classics.

On the positive side, the art is wonderfully varied and in most cases I wanted to see some of these movies based solely on the poster they inspired. These designs are clever, artful, well-executed and encapsulate the themes of their topic movies wonderfully. They've also included a good blend of genres in the movies represented from outright horror to comedy.

The only negative I would point out is that there is some amount of repetition. Several movies had 2-3 posters included so this pads the numbers a bit.

In summary, a wonderful and handsome coffee-table volume for the movie buff. Many of these I'd have a hard time resisting the temptation to cut them out and frame them to hang on the wall. I'd proudly display it on my coffee table despite the sad truth that I would have to dust it once in a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie inspired art posters 27 Nov 2013
By Parka HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Length: 1:51 Mins
Movie posters nowadays seems to be all about realism, photography and special effects. A book like Alternative Movie Posters is a breath of fresh air with the art and graphic design inspired posters.

The posters featured are not official, hence the book title. They are created for film fests, theatres, art galleries, periodicals and even specifically for this book.

More than 100 poster designers featured, and each has around 1 to 2 pieces of artworks featured. Most are drawn and there's an amazing variety of illustrative art and style. Quality of art is top notch. The selection is also very well done with a nice mixture of cult movies and hollywood blockbusters.

The highlight of the book is the concept that goes behind the creation of these posters. Some are straightforward, but there are also many that are visually smart and will make you do a double-take.

It's really quite fascinating to see all the artists and with their alternative designs. Additionally, there are also commentary from the artists on their designs, influence, favourite films, preferred medium and other info.

The book's a 208-page hardcover. Paper is thick and low gloss. The artworks are wonderfully reproduced.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wild, Book-Length Collection Of Uninhibited Poster Art 9 Feb 2014
By Ben J Korgen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a high-quality collection of poster art representing artists who let their imaginations run free without the tempering forces of convention. It offers an idea-triggering mine of outrageousness that should thrill art students and others who like to break boundaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars The big (and best) book of alternative movie posters. 17 Nov 2013
By Vic Rattlehead - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The big (and best) book of alternative movie posters.

This surely has to be the definitive book on Alternative Movie posters. With 208 in color and large on the page I doubt if anyone will publish anything better. The author really has done a huge amount of research to pull all this detail together and nicely. With a smart, fresh visual perspective, alternative movie posters celebrate classics like Star Wars, Raging Bull, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining as well as cult favorites: The Big Lebowski, Blade Runner, and Pink Flamingos.

"Alternative Movie Posters: Film Art from the Underground" presents a selection of artists such as: Tim Doyle, Rocco Malatesta, Jesse Philips, Joshua Gilbert, just to name a few.

As I've said already, I doubt there will be a better, more comprehensive book on Alternative Movie posters than this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect! 7 Jun 2014
By Paige Lorenzo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I got this book for my film buff boyfriend for Christmas and it was PERFECT! He loves all kinds of movies from obscure films, to artsy foreign features, to big blockbusters, and this book has everything! The book also has awesome little information boxes that go with each poster discussing facts and details about the author and the mediums used to create the posters. We use it as a coffee table book and all my friends have opened it at some point and spent time ogling the pictures. A must have for any film lover!!
