Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A cousin to Brixton rapper Rodney Smith’s psychosis-laden 2005 long-player Awfully Deep, Alternately Deep bandies together a hotchpotch of B-sides, remixes, outtakes, and random curios dating from around that album’s gestation.

Fans may already be familiar with some of the tracks included here: the squelchy "No Love" (during which Smith dubs himself "the black George Clooney" and claims to have a "todger with luminous piss") first appeared on the flip of the "Too Cold" single, while Roots aficionados may recall that "Double Drat" and "Pep My Game" snuck out a couple of years back as exclusive downloads. Quality is generally high, however. A remix of "Check It" mines a seam of mutant dancehall that imagines a Jamaica where broad Cockney MCs rhyme "lovely" with "jubbly". And it’s testament to Smith’s unmistakable style and flair for the unusual that such a gumbo works, however, even when other wilful creative forces appear in the mix - see the eerie, hollowed-out remix of "Colossal Insight", courtesy of dreadlocked East London grime producer Jammer. --Louis Pattison

BBC Review

Alternately Deep consists of rarities, b-sides, obscure downloads and material recorded during the sessions for Root Manuva's last album proper, Awfully Deep. The record label's press release describes it as Awfully Deep in a 'parallel universe'. Consider how looped out that album sounded, and you get some idea of how freakin' weird this record is.

That's freakin' weird good, not freakin' weird bad.

Roots spits lunatic-savant poetry over maniacal beats, accompanied by static, heavy baselines and crunked-out bleeps and squeaks. This music is dark, paranoid and compelling - stinking of the city from whence it came, but somehow always maintaining an element of pop, a factor which only adds tothesound'sunsettling qualities.

Mr. Manuva is a genius and everyone should buy everything he releases. Forever. But, if you must be a download bore, the picks from this album are "No Love", "Seat Yourself (Miami Mix)", "Grown Man" and "Get U High". --Ruth Jamieson

Glowing the Cool 15 Mar 2006
By C. Hill
Format:Audio CD
This album is a flex. He has achieved his long term, realised his worth as we all will. I'll just say that if you've followed the work of Roots Manuva from the decedance portrayed in Brand New Second Hand, the mystic dreams and aspirations in Run Come save me, the glistening dub of Dub Come Save me, The immense cryptic analogies and superbly reflective production of 'Awfully Deep', his collaborations with the likes of Herbaliser, Leftfield, Ty, Rodney P, etc, this album comes across as an artist in his throne. His talking his talk throughout this album, accompanied with his always diverse and expanding sonic imagery maintains this man as a pioneer. 'Things we do' is a reason for buying this spacially creative album alone. However 'This World is Mine' you may know was a hidden cut on the 'Awfully Deep Bonus Disc', but this time its rub-a-dub-dub. Just buy this album, explore the blend. Unprecidented, this hasnt happened before!

Not as good as others 24 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
Saw some of Roots vids on YouTube and was absolutely sold. I bought 'Duppy Writer' (see other review) and was quite impressed but was a little underwhelmed with this one. Have ordered 'Slime and Reason' and will see what I think of that.

The reason this one didn't appeal was that in places I found it a bit dreary and not as upbeat, catchy or deep as some of his other stuff. It's not really bad but just a bit disappointing.
