BBC Review

The release of Alternate Endings, a B-sides collection from Middle England post-hardcore bastions, Fightstar, raises a question: just how antsy do staunch devotees get during that 'tween-album limbo period? Evidently, enough to warrant this provisional record, just to keep the keenest fans ticking over until the next album proper.

But, at the same time, the fact that a band so prematurely dismissed have clocked up enough material to put out an assemblage of this sort underlines that Fightstar are not a band to be miscalculated. And its insular fan-focused characteristic suggests they're certainly not putting this out to make a quick buck, as is so often the nature of such anthologies.

The sequential development on display across Alternate Endings, while not laid out chronologically, makes for a noteworthy aspect to consider - the earlier recordings see Charlie Simpson ostensibly knocking on 60-a-day to achieve a strained, grizzled croakiness (instant credibility, see?) while the later material carries a far more organic quality.

And though the more recent material - Dark Star or Hold Out Your Arms, for instance, both B-sides from the One Day Son, This Will All Be Yours epoch - may not be a return to choirboy trillings, they're a significant step on from the primary amalgam of desperate emo yearnings and noise for noise's sake. Deep amongst the echelons of Fightstar lurks some striking musicianship, evidently only visible when the bravado is left at the door. A taste of things to come, one might hope?

And yet, ready to subvert this theory with evil glee comes Where's The Money, Lebowski?, the lone specimen of brand new material on the compilation. Stale, strident and contrived beyond principle, it's a rapid excursion straight back to square one. That said, it's at least equipped with the element of surprise.

Acoustic offerings lifted from Colin Murray's Radio 1 sessions provide similarly diverse extremes of quality. Where a stripped-bare interpretation of Floods heightens the song dramatically and pays testament to the band's broad aptitude, a lumpen, oafish take on Waitin' For A Superman by the Flaming Lips quickly undoes any display of artistry expressed during the aforementioned track.

Still, Alternate Endings proves, if nothing else, that Fightstar are far from transitory. Somehow, they have forged three solid years' worth of a respectable career, escaping laughable boy band ties and gaining something in the way of impossible acceptance, something which Alternate Endings cements deservingly. But, as a record in itself, the customary hotch-potch omnibus aspect confirms this not so much as an album, but as an article of merchandise strictly for the most active of fans. --Al Fox

GET IT GET IT GET IT 27 May 2008
Format:Audio CD
This B-Sides/Exclusives Album hasn't actually come out yet but as a huge fan of Fightstar I've heard all of these tracks already with the exception of 'Where's The Money Lebowski?' which is a new track exclusive to this album so I can safely say that this is definately a worthwhile buy for any old or new fan of the band. This album displays songs that range from the heaviest of the heavy to stunning ballads.

The acoustic versions of Floods and 99 are definately not just on this album to fill up space as the songs change so vastly from the originals which can be seen more in 99 as the vocal melody has changed to fit the slower and less heavy style.

Waiting For Superman is a cover of The Flaming Lips and is fantastic mostly because of frontman Charlie Simpsons stunning vocals. The track also changes a lot from the original song in other ways such as a new drum beat and it is definately one of the more moving songs on this album.

Amethyst is taken from the bands debut EP 'They Liked You Better When You Were Dead' and as the EP sold out quickly it is hard to get this song on CD these days. The track is another slower song and I think it is definately one of the better tracks that this band has written because of the singing from both Alex and Charlie and the general great guitar, bass and drum lines.

In Between Days is an acoustic track and is a cover of The Cure. The song is quite similar to the original but it varies slightly at tiems such as the fact that it now has a harmonica in it :P.

Shinji Ikari is a solo track from Alex Westaway. It's another slower track and while it is well written and sung I didn't take to this track at first. I think it's one that takes a while to grow on you but other people I know have thought it was great from the start so I guess that its just a matter of opinion! Dark Star is also mainly Alex singing but it does feature Charlie for the bridge and parts of the chorus. It's another slow one in the verses and bridge but it picks up the pace in the chorus with Alex and Charlie switching between vocals which makes this one of my favourite Fightstar B-Sides.
I think I'm probably boring people now so for Gracious,Fight For Us and Hold Out Your Arms I'll just say that these are up there with the better B-Sides. Fight for Us gets a lot more heavy towards the end but if you're not a fan of screaming you can probably just about live it out. Hold Out Your Arms is an acoustic and is a good listen purely because of the vocals from Charlie in the chorus!

Right not many tracks left to talk about now and hopefully you're not bored out of your mind yet. Nerv/Seele and Breaking The Law are the tracks for the fans of the heavy stuff. Lots of screaming, lots of distortion and lots of great guitar/bass lines and amazing drumming.

Zihuatanejo is a great ending to this album because the whole track is just a big epic thingggg! It's hard to describe really because its not particularly heavy and not that slow either and yeah...just a great listen!

And thats that! Hopefully this has been kinda helpful to you!

EDIT: Amazon has the track listing slightly wrong...Zihuatanejo comes before Breaking the Law and the final track is an acoustic cover of the Deftones song Minerva

I have to admit it has taken me a while to get into fightstar, I disliked them when I heard their cover version of minerva by the deftones. However, my friend was listening to their song floods and I was instantly converted, it sounds like it has been inspired by muse, from the piano to the full on rock at the end of the song. The whole album continues in a similar vein the only reason I have not given the album 5 stars is it gets very shouty in some places which can be irritating.

Amazing collection of b-sides with the exception of Waitin' For A Superman which just seems out of place. It's nice to have all the b-sides (or at least most of them) packaged together rather than having to hunt them down one by one.
