The Nineties brought us a myriad of musical genres: baggy, britpop, alternative dance and (ugh) nu-metal. One of these more memotable movements in the early nineties was shoegazing (band playing a naggingly addictive drone, with the lead singer's voice would have a lysergic quality). Groups like Ride, My Bloody Valentine and Chapterhouse ruled the day.
But as always one must trace the roots, and the ones of shoegazing are: Velvet Underground, Spaceman 3, Jesus and Mary Chain and The Telescopes. This band formed in 1986 and specialized in drone rock par excellence, and `Altered Perception', an anthology of their work, captures perfectly what the band was about. It is also worth noting that The Telescopes gradually moved to psychedelia in their later years and this is also reflected on the compilation. The second half of the album goes beyond the usual shoegazing confinements (especially 16T#3 and Soul Full of Tears) and is the more inventive side of the record. This is an excellent compilation and an interesting insight into a part of musical history that has been slowly been making a comeback through many emerging post-rock bands who have embraced shoegazing elements in their sound.
