Book Description

16 April 2013 Altered
When you can't trust yourself, who can you believe? Everything about Anna's life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There's Nick, solemn and brooding; Cas, lighthearted and playful; Trev, smart and caring; and Sam ...who's stolen Anna's heart. Reserved and always controlled, Sam does everything with purpose. When the Branch decides it's time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them. Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to go, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There's just one problem. Sam and the boys don't remember anything before living in the lab -- not even their true identities. Now on the run, her father's warning in her head, Anna begins to doubt everything she thought she knew about herself. She soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they're both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

1.0 out of 5 stars DREADFUL TWEENY RUBBISH 22 Feb 2014
By g
Format:Kindle Edition
Altered is the story of Anna, who sneaks down to her fathers secret lab every night to spend time with four captive boys, all of which are obviously gorgeous and generally shirtless. These ‘boys’ are part of a genetic alteration project designed to create the perfect soldier, which Anna helps her dad with for the bigger, ominous sounding ‘branch’. All is good until one day they escape and take Anna with them, they embark on a journey to discover why they cant remember anything outside of the lab, what they had hidden and who the branch really are.

Yes its as dreadful as it sounds, the plot was not helped by the most annoying narrator on the face of the earth. She had a way of splitting sentences in to smaller pieces or adding question marks where there shouldn’t be any:

“we walked. into the kitchen? and saw. a cup. and a saucer? then I looked? and. there was. a man?”

Forgetting miss annoying narrator, the story didn’t save itself. You wake up one night, sneak down to your fathers secret lab and find he’s hiding four young boys, so what do you do? call the police? let them go? no- you keep sneaking down there, for FIVE years. Not once did Anna question what was happening with the boys, nor whether it was right or not! She does say on occasion that she considered letting them go, REALLY? considered it?! Jeez.

Then we have the surprising twist. Except nope, that was beyond obvious too, then there was another, which was just as obvious. The biggest issue was that there was little point to the book, if I’d got no memory and escaped a secret lab, my first order of business would be finding out why they kept me there and who I was.

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it more than expected 16 Feb 2014

This book had me hooked from chapter one. It's original and not your typical girl-meets-boy (although there is an element of this, it's not the base of the whole plot or the focus of the novel) and as though she's the usual helpless girl etc. Instead, the protagonist demonstrates that girls are just a capable as boys as she learns to defend herself and doesn't give in to anything easily. I bought this when I was I'll and I literally couldn't put it (or the sequels) down, which prevented me from boredom. I think I finished this one in about a day or two, which doesn't very often happen for me with books, as much as I enjoy them. Overall, I'd most definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fast paced, action-adventure type books mixed with a bit of romance and a lot of twists. To be honest, I'd recommend it to anyone who reads as it it just brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 22 Jan 2014

I absolutely loved this read, I'd spotted it several times in my suggested books, skim read the description and thought I'd give it a try (after struggling to find a good read for a few days) and I'm so glad I did! I couldn't put it down, after reading until God knows when in the morning (resulting in a very tired day at work!) I read it in 2 days. Admittedly, at the start I was a bit unsure of the story, finding the idea of having four boys locked in your secret basement lab a tad strange! After a few chapters in I was hooked! The story gets going quickly and soon turned into a gripping adventure full of twists and turns as Anna and the boys find there escape and unlock the secrets of their past. I love how loveable the characters are and how they each have very unique personalities (Cal definitely being my favourite!!) Overall beautifully written and I can't wait to get lost in the second book!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and exciting! 9 Jan 2014

So Anna is pretty much living the dream; four years ago she found 4 boys locked away in her basement/dad's lab. Four hot boys.

Like I said, she's living the dream, right?

Intelligent Trev, playful Cas, Moody Nick and the one Anna is secretly in love with, Sam.
All four boys have had their memories wiped so nobody has a clue how or why they're down there. Anna sneaks in to see the boys almost every night so they've bonded a little over the years, (apart from Nick who isn't a big fan of Anna)She sees them as family and brings them things when she can.(I found it a little odd that Anna had never really questioned the whole thing much but I went with it)

I don't want to say too much or give anything away so I'll try to keep this simple...The boys break out and Anna goes with them. While The Branch are looking for them, they try to discover bits from their past and follow Sam's pre-memory-wipe clues with the hopes of filling in some of the blanks in their memories and getting answers.

It's intriguing and exciting and I raced through the book trying to figure out what was going to happen next. The thing I loved about this book was that I didn't find it predictable. I couldn't guess the next revelation so was genuinely surprised each time the group found something new.

The reason I deducted a star was because I felt like the relationship between Sam and Anna could have been better explored. It was meant to be quite a big part of the story but somehow I felt it took a back seat and when something did happen, it was brief, it was unexplained and it left me unsatisfied.

Other than that though I really liked it and I'll definitely be picking up the next one when it comes out on Kindle ;)
