5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for my requirements, 15 Nov 2008
This review is from: Altec Lansing inMotion iM500 - Compact, lightweight, super-thin speaker dock for iPod Nano (Electronics)
I work offshore, so travel to and from work is an integral part of my life. So when I wanted to purchase a set of iPod speakers I had to restrict myself to reviewing speakers that I could easily transport. As MP3 players and headsets are pretty much de rigueur to offshore workers, I have had lots of opportunities to view other people's speaker purchases.

I decided on Altec Lansing because their speakers are used on our home computer and give good sound reproduction, and I chose this particular model due to their size.

These speakers are set up in my office offshore, and the volume is set relatively low so that the music is more in the background. When I initially received them, I did fully test the volume which I found to be comparably as loud as my Technics system installed at home - and without any noticeable distortion.

The power supply is a neat design with interchangeable international plugs that "snap" into place so that you can power this anywhere in the world. You can insert batteries and use those, but I have no need to use them.

I use a 2nd generation 8GB nano iPod that sits neatly and firmly in the docking connector. The iPod battery is charged when connected.

The only controls are the on/off and +/- volume buttons.

There is an AUX jack and USB connector in the back. I have not used these.

The speaker system has an auto shutdown if, after a few minutes, it has detected that the iPod is not being played. I think this is a very thoughtful design feature.

Sound quality is deep and rich and will resonate around the room if you increase the volume.

In summary these speakers are compact, light, easily transportable and with good sound quality. I am quite happy to recommend these to those who might consider them.

Agree with previous reviewer. Plays nicely and has plenty of good points.

However the product information clearly states that it charges the iPod. Well it doesn't charge the 4th generation Nanos. I bought 2 of these (Nanos and docks) for the kids for Christmas and was quite disapppointed that I have now had to buy a double charging station by Griffin Griffin Powerdock 2 6152-MLTDCK2 - 2 Position Charging Station for iPod and iPhone to charge the Nanos. OK Apple should include a charger...but they do not so I bought the inMotion to compensate for the deficiency. Pity. Otherwise the kids love it. Bought two of this. One for my granddaughter and the other for myself. Disappointed this doesn't charge my ipod however, is a great speaker which I keep in kitchen. Good quality sound and looks very neat.
