I read about the Altec Lansing 'In Motion Compact' Ipod sound dock in the Mail On Sunday's Live magazine suppliment by their gadget expert Rob Waugh...he gave the product top marks for sound quality, portability and price. On his recomendation I purchased this item through Amazon on their express next day delivery for a great price.
This is without doubt an incredible piece of kit, it comes with a power adaptor with international plugset and can also be powered by 4 AA batteries which the makers claim will last 24 hours with the volume up full (have'nt tried that yet) It also comes with 2 ipod inserts for the ipod touch and ipod nano. There is also the option to register the product on line to get an extra years warranty giving you 2 years in total.
I was very impressed by the unique stylish cover that folds back as a stand and protects it when carrying it around. When used as a stand it also gives it total stability, very handy when you want to control your ipod, in my case my ipod classic, it won't move around when your your accessing your cover flow etc. It also has a aux port for connecting non ipod mp3 players or for connecting to other equipment.
When trying it for the first time I thought this looks really good, can the sound match it's looks. I selected my default track for testing my sound systems..Pink Floyd's Time..I was completly blown away, I set the ipod with the rock option on the equaliser turned on and turned the volume up full, the sound quality did not distort, the sound was incredible I was really impressed. The unit's simplicity is completed by only having 3 large buttons conviently set at the top of the unit, power-on/off, volume up and volume down. I really cannot speak highly enough of this product..it really is that good.

There has been plenty of good reviews for this. Which is part reason I bought it. The sound from its little speakers are brilliant. I have never managed to have it fully turned up because it is soooo loud in my living room, which is 24 by 14 feet in size. In the bedroom only around 1/4 volume and no problem in the back garden. For a portable dock the bass is deep and rich. Build quality is solid but I would have liked a handle/grip to use when going further afield like beach/picnics etc. Tried it with batteries and they do last for ages. Many friends have been impressed with this docking station, one saying that it sounds much better than his Hi-fi system. For a portable dock you cannot get better than this especially at the price. BUY IT

I use the Altec Lansing with an Ipod Touch and for the money this should be an essential purchase.

- Battery life is fantastic
- The unit is light and extremely portable (about the size and weight of a large hardback novel)
- Sound quality is very good with a high level of detail, no tinniness, good bass reproduction

I've taken it camping, use it in the garden, kitchen and the bathroom and I am really pleased with it especially as it only cost £50. The kids love it too especially as they can watch the videos while iTunes plays!

There are some idiosyncracies that I haven't looked in to yet. Sometimes a video will display when the song is playing and sometimes it wont (I think this relates to whether the song is playing when you dock the iPod or whether you select the song when it is docked). The positioning of the volume controls on the unit could be better placed so you don't have to lean over the ipod to change the volume and knowk it from the cradle. However, for a £50 device these are so minor that it does not affect the rating.

Get one for the summer and show everyone how shocking your music collection is!

Like Paddybhoy, I read the review in the Mail on Sunday magazine. I then looked on Amazon to see if anyone had reviewed it and saw Paddybhoy's review. So I told my partner that I'd like one for my birthday. But... he didn't seem to get the hint so I bought it anyway. Unknown to me, he bought a completely different one here but in my favourite colour (purple) and one that's a lot smaller than the Altec.

So I gave them both a go. The purple one was very funky and had touch sensitive controls. Very impressive. The sound quality was pretty good too for such a small gadget. However, two major problems with it: I couldn't get my iPhone in it without taking off the bottom part of the protective case AND there was major sound interference when the phone was looking for a signal - which it did a lot. So back it went.

The Altec is light, easily portable, the sound quality is terrific especially for such a modest looking product. I disagree that it lacks bass - it's fine. You don't get any interference when your phone is looking for a signal and you don't have to take off the case. The only gripe I do have is that the controls are right behind the top of the phone so not as easily accessible as they could be. But as it's so good overall, I can happily ignore that.

As for the lack of remote or radio - you don't need a remote if you're using it on batteries, only on the mains. It would be nice, but it's not a showstopper. And a radio - all you need do is download one of the many radio apps on iTunes and you've got one!

When you compare this with Bose and the much more expensive options, it really holds its own and is a complete no-brainer if you can't afford the top-end kit. Buy it - you won't regret it. I didn't and am very happy to recommend it.
