A couple of weeks before I went on holiday I read a review of this and decided it sounded like the perfect book to take away with me (aside from it being hardback and taking valuable space up in my suitcase along with several other books - maybe I should buy a kindle after all....).

Anyway, back to the book. Overall I was very disappointed and nearly gave up on several ocassions. My main complaint is around the almost relentless action scenes that seem to comprise the majority of the book. I lost count of the amount of times that the main characters would be standing in a room and then: "the door explodes and Uzi wielding bad guys burst into the room, guns ablaze". Literally every room/house/hotel/shed/garage they walked into would then be attacked by a barrage of seemingly jaw-droppingly incompotent henchemen - surely someone could have suggested using a sniper rifle from afar after the 14th failed attempt at crashing through the front door.

Typically the frontal assaults would then be followed by 30 pages of chase scenes, which somehow just don't seem to work as well on the page as they do on the screen. The moment I almost gave up on the whole thing was when the two main characters were escaping on a scooter, and as they drove along they came towards two men carrying a wedding cake. "Seriously, he's not going to go there is he? I thought to myself. But yes, indeed he did as they "jinxed then swereved and then crashed through the wedding cake". At least it wasn't a pane of glass.

I've recently come to the conclusion that if I don't enjoy a book I'll just stop reading it and start something else - so I suppose the fact I finished it say's something and is the reason it's two stars and not one. I'm also sure that a lot of people out there will really enjoy it - but it was just a few too many preposterous action scenes for my liking.

Utterly implausible 5 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I have read thousands of books but Altar of Bones takes a sizeable biscuit for implausibility.
I found the plot ridiculous and the ease with which the 2 main characters slide through the abundance of absurd life-threatening situations is staggering.
To compare it to a Dan Brown work does it no compliment because his work is equally burdened with impossible escapes from impossible situations.
The comparison by another reviewer with Jack Reacher and Uma Thurman in Kill Bill is way off track because Jack Reacher is brilliant and so is Uma Thurman.
Overall, I was neither captivated nor enthralled, nor even in suspense with a book that could only be described as formulaic and amateurish.

At lot of the reviews I've read I don't understand, yes the book was far fetched in parts and it is unrealistic, but isn't that the beauty of imagination? It seems that people criticize an author for making a making a work of fiction....a work of fiction.

All in all this book was excellent, yes we know its far fetched but the way JFK, Monroe, Rasputin tied in was I thought fantastic. It had me gripped cover to cover.
Fair enough it was repetitive in parts but all in all the "bones" of the story were gripping. Easily one of the better books I've read in this genre.

Don't listen to the nay sayers give it a go its worth it.

This is a good story. Really sweeps you up into the frozen north. I enjoyed it better than Dan Brown's books. I've only given it 3 stars because I felt the ending was very flat. Read more
