Buying for Panther? Words of warning from one who knows., 15 May 2004
The disc you will get in the box for DiskWarrior 3.0MAC is likely to be version 3.0 or 3.0.1. If you are buying this product for a Mac of any flavour released since September 2003 running OS X you will need to excercise extreme caution or end up crying hot tears of frustration. This is because these versions of DiskWarrior are not supported by the very latest OS X or Panther environment, [ie; 10.3.3 at time of wriring], and if you install and attempt to use this product as clearly instructed you will simply crash and thrash your mac and have to endure blood curdling clunks and clicks from inside the machine. You will NOT be able to boot up your Mac from the DiskWarrior CD which is the whole point of it. Your Mac will shortly thereafter lock up totally. As as you cannot run DiskWarrior from the Mac, [hard drive/start-up disk], you will be left with expensive software and Mac neither of which you can use. You will be left with no choice but to do the last thing you should do and just switch the computer off and go through the process again and again until you've made few calls to tech support or pace it through with your retailer if your lucky enough to have one that knows what they are talking about and are able to do that. The manufacturer, Alsoft, have dealt with this and updated DiskWarrior to version 3.0.2 which is available as a download installer requiring you to burn yourself a new disc, based on your existing version of DiskWarrior. Although, as far as I can tell, this may work on MAC OS X 10.3.2 but not any any machine less than 6 months old. You will need to purchase a still more enhanced DiskWarrior CD direct from Alsoft at cost to yourself. Frankly, if you have just purchased a Mac and are looking for utilities to protect your investment not CRIPPLE it, I would not make the mistake I made and steer well clear of this unholy mess. People, check out Alsoft's info support page; http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html#Panther. All the information is there and Alsoft have been clear and open about it it's just I think that retailers either don't know or just forget to tell people about this issue and what to about it before they buy DiskWarrior 3 and go back and commit murder on their hard-disks. Do yourself a favour and just say no to this if you have a brand new Mac. I took my DiskWarrior software back to my retailer and went home with TechTool Pro4 and Norton Antivirus 9.0 instead and I am now very happy with a gently purring Mac.
