Review

`Already Gone is a thriller in its purest and most cinematic incarnation - not a word or emotion wasted, it's a taut, nerve-jangling ride that barrels towards an electrifying conclusion, which will leave you shaken, stirred, and above all else eagerly awaiting the next Rector novel' --Ray Banks

Product Description

Jake Reese is an ordinary guy with an ordinary job, trying to block out the memory of his violent past by planning for the future with his new wife, Diane. But the past has a habit of refusing to stay buried...When two men attack Jake in a car park and cut off his ring finger, he tries to dismiss it as an unlucky case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. But when events take a more sinister turn and Diane goes missing, Jake knows he can no longer hide from the truth. As he embarks on a mission to find Diane, Jake finds himself dragged back into the life he thought he had walked away from forever and the days ahead begin to unfold in terrifying ways...

By Michael Watson TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a book which pulls no punches. Right from the outset when the main protagonist is viciously attacked for no apparent reason through to the final page when the reader is (well, I was) completely unsure of the ultimate outcome.

It's a story which makes you want to read on until you know what happens but, as said, you won't know until the last page, hence one very late night for me!

The story's good, the character depiction is not too involved, indeed some people just breeze through and they either die or, a few, don't.

Where I found the story to be weak was, in fact, the attitude of the main character Jake Reese who was forever saying the opposite, disagreeing with every point of view, getting on my nerves, actually. I understand where the author was going with this but I did feel it was overdone. It's not a long novel, so the percentage of the story in which Reese is whinging is quite high. Even so, I enjoyed it. The author weaves many threads surrounding a simple story but one which affects just about every character in the book - a robbery gone wrong.

This is a book helped to promotion by amazon encore and it deserves to be more widely read. There are plenty of so called thrillers around at the moment which are not as good as this but which command more of the buying public's wallet. I hope John Rector becomes more appreciated. I shall certainly look for his next book.

Already Gone 11 Dec 2011
By Champollion VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
John Rector has already produced two best selling novels, ("The Grove" and "The Cold Kiss," the latter currently being developed into a movie,) and has written this barnstorming thriller.

Jake Reese, a college professor is attacked after leaving a bar, and he wonders if his past has come back to haunt him. He has worked hard to put that violent youth behind him and recently secured a new wife and a job as a writing teacher at an American university.

The incident of the attack affects his new marriage and treads a familiar path by making matters worse by excessive drinking.

Rector's use of the first person narrative maintains the pace of the novel and drives up the tension as he recognises his two attackers on campus before his wife Diane disappears.

Failing to get any sort of action from the Police, he does not hesitate to return to his former life and try and save the woman he loves.

The author paints the main character Jake Reese as a cynical, stubborn individual who has managed to turn his life around, in part thanks to Doug, a tutor who befriended him , whilst he was imprisoned as a young man, but also thanks to his determined personality.

The climax of the story and the identification of the 'villain' is unexpected and Rector successfully keeps you guessing to the end.

Fast and Furious 4 Jan 2012
By MarkW
Format:Paperback
On the back of this book it states that it is for "fans of Harlen Coben's Tell No One and Linwood Barclay's No Time for Goodbye" - and the similarity is immediately obvious from the cover style, loosely linked sentence fragment title, and the style of writing. Like those two books the story leaps directly into the action and I found myself gripped and quickly absorbed by the fast paced story. There is plenty of excitement and twists and turns as the main character Jake Reese seeks to understand what has happens to him and his wife. It is fortunate that the pace is so relentless as, if you step back, there do seem to be some fairly large gaps in the plot and certain events in the book are never satisfactorily explained. The ending in particular did not seem to really make much sense. As other reviewers have mentioned the negative attitude of Jake can be irritating at times. So an exciting, enjoyable and undemanding read but not one to think about too much.
