This is a book which pulls no punches. Right from the outset when the main protagonist is viciously attacked for no apparent reason through to the final page when the reader is (well, I was) completely unsure of the ultimate outcome.
It's a story which makes you want to read on until you know what happens but, as said, you won't know until the last page, hence one very late night for me!
The story's good, the character depiction is not too involved, indeed some people just breeze through and they either die or, a few, don't.
Where I found the story to be weak was, in fact, the attitude of the main character Jake Reese who was forever saying the opposite, disagreeing with every point of view, getting on my nerves, actually. I understand where the author was going with this but I did feel it was overdone. It's not a long novel, so the percentage of the story in which Reese is whinging is quite high. Even so, I enjoyed it. The author weaves many threads surrounding a simple story but one which affects just about every character in the book - a robbery gone wrong.
This is a book helped to promotion by amazon encore and it deserves to be more widely read. There are plenty of so called thrillers around at the moment which are not as good as this but which command more of the buying public's wallet. I hope John Rector becomes more appreciated. I shall certainly look for his next book.
