Product Description

He went pro at the age of ten. Along with Warren Haynes, he's the guitarist in the Allman Brothers Band. He has also toured with Eric Clapton. But most of all he's the leader of the DTB he founded more than 15 years ago. The band's mix of electric rock, acoustic blues, gospel, and ragas is unique and has established the band as a leading force amongst contempoary roots bands in the US. 'Already Free' is a cool record, recorded at Derek's new studio. Recommended. - Digipak. DEREK TRUCKS - gtrs/bass, MIKE MATTISON - voc, KOFI BURBRIDGE - kbds, TODD SMAILIE - bass, YONRICO SCOTT - drums, COUNT M'BUTU - perc. Specila guests: DOYLE BRAMHALL II - gtr/gtr, SUSAN TEDESCHI - gtr/voc, plus horns.Medium 1

My signed copy (!) of Already Free arrived from the US this morning, in the same post as my tickets for the April 22 DTB gig at Shepherds Bush Empire - an exciting day! I've listened to it a couple of times, and I think it's going to take a while to grow on me. There are some excellent, immediately accessible tracks, and the band is extended to include other musicians, notably Doyle Bramhall II, with whom DT played with Eric Clapton on tour last year, and who co-produces some of the tracks here. My first impression is that this album has a narrower musical spectrum than the superb Songlines, which is on almost permanent play in my car. However, each of the previous DTB albums have been rather different from one another, so I suppose fans should have expected this! This album is the first produced by DT himself, and recorded at his new studio at his home in Florida. I think that DT's innate humility has resulted in less prominence for his own playing and more emphasis on a group performance. It has a more bluesy feel than Songlines, with the world/roots influences definitely muted by comparison. However, my immediate feeling is that if I'd never heard Songlines, Already Free would be brilliant and worth 5 stars. So, I guess it's going to take a while to soak in, but I'm sure it will become a favourite in time - I find that albums with immediate payback pale after a while, but those you have to work at a bit are ultimately more rewarding. Definitely worth buying - and perhaps a more gentle way in to DTB than some previous albums.

The most exciting electric slide player since Ry Cooder returns with another strong set, and given his tender age it won't be a surprise if he eventually surpasses the master. But, disappointingly, Trucks' trademark amalgam of blues, rock, jazz, eastern and world music and fusion has this time been distilled into a far narrower and much more conventional blues/r&b workout which, whilst delivered as competently as usual, consequently lacks the sheer exhilaration and panoramic outlook of its predecessor, Songlines.

The democratic decision to showcase the band ahead of its leader results in Trucks sometimes sounding like a guest on his own album, so laid back and restrained is his performance on some of the tunes. And, for this reviewer, there are far too few of those 'makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck' moments that characterised his previous albums. Best tracks are "Down Don't Bother Me", a tasty and highly soulful slow burner, and a gutsy reinterpretation of Dylan's "Down In The Flood".

Following 'Songlines' was always going to be difficult. A couple of extended instrumental workouts and some of Kofi Burbridge's sadly-absent flute would have earned the album at least one extra star.

Superb songwriting and musicianship in a blues/rock vein.

DT's guitar/slide playing is sublime, soulful vocals, the band are really together.

A grower. Buy it!

Phenomenal album, saw this reviewed in Classic Rock magazine and listen to the albums opener and was literally blown away. The rawness of the singers voice, the tightness of the band and above all, Derek's slick slide playing is sublime. He also adds eastern sounds to some of these songs which is refreshing and his wife sings on 'Back where I started' which is one of my favourites from the album - not an average mediocre song on the album - a must buy for blues enthusiasts :D

Seriously. I could listen to this all day and every day. The fantastic lyric. The blues/soul/gospel led sounds. Just Heaven!

Bought this twice, one for me and one for my son after I listened to it. It's added to my favourites section on the CD rack
