This book is profane and very nasty (as are his non vampire books)but Charlie Huston is a bit special, I think. He writes stories that are very exciting. It's a case of just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, they just did. And he does it at a pace and with a wit that has me gasping at the outrageous talent of the man. I discard a lot of books half read out of sheer bordom but this author keeps me on the edge of my seat, hyper-ventilating and ripping over the pages as fast I can. Even if some of those pages have me wincing with the nastiness of it all. I can only imagine that Charlie Huston is going to sink into obscuriy because there aren't enough readers who can take the horror or he's going to be a superstar.

Superb!! 5 Dec 2007
Format:Paperback
I thought this book was great, Joe Pitt is a Vampyre. A proper one. Not one that has long flowing hair with a french accent, who spends alot of time hypnotizing women into sleeping with him and then he turns them or lets them go on their way..... Nope. Joe has the vyrus and he didn't get that from just falling in love with the wrong woman. He needs blood to survive and has no problem in taking it when he needs it, whether they are evil doers or not. I like that. He is deep in trouble left right and center but he doesn't conform to the various societys and politics surrounding him. He can handle himself but at the same time Joe isn't some all powerful vamp, he gets his ass kicked but still manages to come out with smart alec comments whilst getting his head pounded in.

The book can be violent but it also has a lot of dark humour - the scenes with Terry and his Society just cracked me up.

I can't say much more about the story - the other reviewers have done a great job for me. All I can say is the book had be guessing and I whipped through it in no time.

Brilliant read 26 May 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought this book after being recommended by a friend, and finished it two days after it arrived. It is a very good book, interesting and a nice new take on Vampirism, without them becoming pathetic, shiny, two dimensional characters for tweens.

It might be a little hard to get into the different dialogue style, but it works well, the action is well written and its simply a very engaging story throughout. I have book two ordered already :)

Hard-Boiled Bloodsuckers for the Win
If more vampire fiction was this good, I'd read more of it. Charlie Huston is the king of the land of morally ambiguous characters, but not necessarily unlikable ones. Read more

Suckingly good.
There are writers you slip into and writer you have to work at and Charlie Huston is as smooth as warm butter. I was hooked from the opening line, `I smell them before I see them'. Read more
