A very good read,

This review is from: Alpha And Omega: The Search For The Beginning And The End Of The Universe (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading this. Seife continues to use his writing ability and style in a manner that helps you to understand even quite difficult aspects, as in his book Zero. I would say that Zero was more interesting, for me atleast with an interest in mathematics more specifically, but this definitely satisfies the enquiring mind for those who (as some reviews mentioned in the book and in 'Decoding the Universe' says) have had little or no formal training in the sciences.
Alpha and Omega takes you through the development of our cosmological understanding, from the superstitions and gods of old, through the insights gained in earlier science, and to our modern grasp of our universe. This also makes the historical aspect of the book interesting (again, similar to Zero; just reading about mankind's development is intriguing). It later takes you through pretty much all the fundamental particles of the standard model; how they behave, why they are required, and how they were discovered - and even onto future implications, pondering the effects of the next cosmological revolution. There is some repetition of ideas, examples and illustrations that were used in Zero, so some of the material will be familiar to those who have read it, moreso in the early sections of the book. Overall, it is a very good read, as well as the writing style.
