This is the only recording I have of James MacMillan's music. A while ago I chanced upon his name and a short musical excerpt on R3 late one evening and determined to investigate further. I now regret that I did not do so sooner.

This is breathtakingly beautiful a capella music - both spirited & spiritual, passionate and most magnificently sung by the Capella Nova. I sing in my local Church choir (a bungling amateur - and I'm not being modest) and to hear voices such as these, so pure, so seamlessly integrated and effortless, delivering compositions which must be hugely difficult to sing, is for me a highly uplifting experience.

The music has a strong religious underpinning (more specifically Roman Catholic) but I venture to suggest that whether you hold any sort of faith, or indeed none, this music has the capacity to touch your soul in a way that little else can.

There are 11 tracks on the disc and all are of such high quality that it is very difficult to pick highlights, however I would make particular mention of two. First, the title track which sets to music extracts from Revelations and contains some melting harmonies. But for me the star of the show is "Fiat Mihi" - 5 minutes of a capella perfection and I defy anyone not to be moved by the tender final couplet, "My Son, my boy, your sacred head is wounded".

Flaubert said that language was like a cracked kettle on which we beat out tunes for bears to dance to, while all the time we long to move the stars to pity. To transfer the analogy to song, bears dance to my singing and the stars are surely moved by this.
