Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I eat porridge at home at least 3 times a week. There is no way I am ever going to use these Alpen porridge pots as a substitute for that. A bag of porridge oats at Asda costs 56p for 500g. 8 Alpen pots of 60g each will set you back just short of £8. Even if I factor in the other products I use in my daily porridge, that's one heck of an enormous profit margin for the manufacturer. Still, these are for people on the move who just want the no mess of adding boiling water to the pot and having an instant fix. Sort of like a pot noodle. I suppose it's a healthier option than crisps or a sausage roll for a snack break.
Did I like it? Not much, but as a kind of port in a storm it was okay. You have to stir it vigorously so as to get rid of the lumps and you have to be prepared to leave it to thicken up too - a bit like putting boiling water in instant stuffing. The taste is okay but bland. It's convenient, it'll fill a hole, but really it's not got me singing its praises from the roof tops.

This is an easy to make porridge. Just take off the lid, fill with water to the line, stir and wait a few moments and hey presto, porridge. Unlike other instant porridges, this has milk powder in it, this gives a creamier texture than most. There is a scattering of fruit and nuts, not as much as i would normally put in if I were making it myself though. The overall flavour is a little sweeter than I would normally have.

For those who need it, this is a quick and convenient method of getting a reasonably tasty porridge. The concept is not one that excites me personally though, as the cost per pot is way higher than making it yourself from a big bag of oats, and the amount of expensive and environmentally unfriendly packaging is a big disincentive. Also, when making my own I can have as much or as little as I want and get it flavoured as I want, not as Alpen are dictating I must have. So all in all OK for those who like this kind of thing, but the whole concept doesn’t work for me. 4 stars.

"Deliciously creamy" it says. Well, I'd describe it as "glutinously sticky".

It also claims to be "porridge" which is closer to the truth although there is also 8% wheat flakes. This latter renders it unsuitable for the gluten intolerant who would otherwise be able to deal with true porridge. There are plenty of raisins (10.5%) but not quite so many nuts (2%). Just add water, stir well and wait for two minutes and it's ready, so it's a decent quickie, hot breakfast and can be eaten "on the go" as it were. To be honest, I find the consistency a little off-putting and it makes the sweetness (26.6% sugar, for all love!) all the more cloying. Beyond that sweetness, despite a hint of nut, there's very little flavour to the stuff, too.

I'll stick to real porridge. 100% oats and a scant teaspoon of sugar. All a body needs.

I normally make porridge with milk, and have found other water-based ready-porridges to be too paper-like and weak, so this was a pleasant surprise. It includes milk powder, and after adding hot water, you do end up with a fairly milky and fairly thick porridge- not quite as thick as I normally like, but pretty good nevertheless.

The taste is pretty good. It does taste a lot like wet Alpen. There are plenty of raisins included and it's been just a little bit sweetened compared to Alpen muesli, so overall it's definitely above-average taste-wise as porridges go.

Considering it's called 'fruit and nut', I would've liked more nuts- there are just a few little flakes of grated almond and hazelnut, but personally I think they could've included more and bigger nut pieces- for my taste, anyway.

With the raisins and sweetness I don't think you could convince yourself that this is outstandingly healthy, but it could definitely be a lot worse health-wise.

Pretty good, and very convenient.

This is I guess, the equivalent of pot noodle for the porridge world and I was admittedly quite excited to try it (yes, I know it's just porridge, but still) It's simple enough to prepare: add hot water to the fill line, stir and leave for 2 minutes and it's done... Well, sort of. What I ended up with was a very watery mixture with big gloopy lumps. You need to mix a lot for it to start coming together and even then, the overall mixture was too runny for my liking.

Tastewise, it's not bad - creamy in flavour and not too sweet that it becomes sickly. The fruit and nut content was disappointing and I would have preferred more fruit (in this case, that would be raisins) The portion size is just right, despite my initial impression that it was going to be a stingy portion! From a nutrition point of view, for those interested, one pot contains 239 calories, 6g of fat, 7g protein, 3.4g fibre and 37.7g carbs (16.1g of which is sugar)

I suspect real porridge enthusiasts will avoid this, taking the view that it's much healthier (and cheaper!) to make your own porridge at home. It is good though for taking into the office though or for when you just want something quick. I personally wouldn't buy this flavour again and would opt to try a fruitier version. I would also try adding a touch less water next time to get a slightly thicker porridge, but I guess that's just personal preference. If you want "instant" porridge, this is worth a try - just remember to mix well.
