2.0 out of 5 stars Lumpy and artificial taste 26 Feb 2014
By Marand TOP 500 REVIEWER
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I didn't like this - it had a very lumpy consistency and became 'claggy' within a few seconds. The smell of apricots was quite enticing as it cooked (in the microwave) but tasted very artificial, and I couldn't taste almond at all. I have been buying Oats So Simple porridge for the last year or so and won't be changing to Alpen on this showing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tasted better in the range 25 Jan 2014
By Angela Lovelace VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have tried most of the range of Alpen porridge, but so far have found this one the most bland, flavour wise. The nuts and the apricot pieces did little to give it flavour. There was plenty of them, but it did little to enhance it. As I said on previous interviews these are easy to make, just empty contents into a bowl, fill the empty packet with milk up to the fill line and pop it in the microwave for 2 minutes. Best flavour wise so far have been the Maple & Pecan and the Blueberry & Cranberry & nuts varieties.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy and Filling 2 Jan 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I love Alpen's Raspberry, Apple and Raisin porridge so was really eager to try this new flavour - Apricot, Almond and Hazelnut. This porridge comes in a box with 8 sachets. You have 2 options for cooking (microwave or saucepan). I cooked in the microwave: you open the sachet and pour the mixture into a microwave bowl. There is a line on the packet to show where 150ml of milk is. You add this then mix. You then cook for 2 mins (850W microwave) and then let it cool and eat it. (Alternatively you could boil milk for 2 mins then add to a saucepan and stir for 2 mins.)

The porridge was easy to make, filling and warming. The taste was pleasing and sweet enough for me, I find plain porridge unappetising. I would have liked the apricot taste to be a little stronger in the porridge but the nut flavour came through very nicely when you bit them.

Easy to make
Line on packet eliminates need for jug
Cooking instructions on box and each packet
Pleasing taste - you won't need to add extras like sugar/syrup etc
Long use by date (9 months on my box - this is variable)

I ripped my packet trying to open it so needed a jug
Apricot flavour could be stronger
Microwave instructions only for 850W microwave you have to experiment for other powers
Not for nut allergy sufferers

5.0 out of 5 stars tasty but not fat-free 1 Jan 2014
By Sarah A. I. Davis VINE VOICE

I've been eating the special K porridge for a few weeks now, as a healthy weight loss attempt, for my lunches at work, and so was keen to try this Alpen option. This apricot and almond recipe is really delicious! The sachets are convenient and ideal to take to work with me, you can use the empty sachet to measure out the required milk, but this isn't really necessary as you can surely estimate the amount of milk you need for yourself (?).
A quick blast in the microwave and it's ready. Verdict? Really tasty, and much creamier than the Special K, but 3g of fat per serving compared to 1g. I'm torn between the two!!!!! If you're not on a diet I'd definitely buy this one, if you are on a diet...join me in my dilemma!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nutritional neurosis 14 April 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Over the last few weeks I seem to have gone through a phase of analysing what I eat as if there is some Holy Grail breakfast out there that will keep me going all day and stop me feeling hungry.

This 'add milk and microwave' porridge is not dissimilar to its main rival that we have been buying for years and although there is conflicting information on the web about nutritional content, they seem to be on much of a par.

When I started to compare with a lot of other breakfasts we have tried I couldn't see a huge amount of difference in the statistics and since none of the manufacturers seems to cite glycaemic index values it seems to come down to what your body tells you.

I find these warming, filling and with sufficient natural sweetness to be self-contained. This combined with the fact that by their nature they dictate portion control helps, even if making a simple porridge might yield fewer calories per gram.

If anything, Alpen's offering - a late entrant to the market - has greater variety of texture and interest and I will be switching even though there is oh so little difference when it comes down to it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cereal killer. 13 April 2014

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I love adding fruit and nuts to my porridge to pad it out and to add flavour and texture. However, these sachets fall short of the mark. They are good for stashing in your desk at work for an emergency breakfast, but you could equally as easy buy a multipack of sandwich/ziplock bags, a bag of plain porridge oats and a selection of nuts and freeze-dried fruits and make a tastier and healthier alternative (at a lower price). These sachets are high in sugar, and have an artificial flavour. The texture is gloopy and unpleasant and it's a chore to eat. If they weren't flavoured, they would be impossible to eat.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mmm....gluey 9 April 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I thought these new sachets might work as a quick, healthy, yummy breakfast, but sadly they only fulfilled the quick part of that. The porridge is easy enough to make - empty the sachet in a bowl, then fill the sachet with milk and empty that into the bowl too. Keep a very good hold on the sachet to avoid milk spillage! Then microwave for two minutes - or on my microwave, around 3 minutes.

I didn't like either the taste or the texture of the porridge once cooked. The apricot taste was very artificial, and the porridge had the consistency of glue. It felt unpleasant and slimy in the mouth. I couldn't even finish the bowl. My partner managed to finish his portion, but didn't enjoy it.

The porridge isn't even particularly healthy - one portion contains 6.9 grams of sugar. You could have one portion of Weetos, the chocolate wholegrain cereal, for just an extra 0.2 grams of sugar per portion, as Weetos has 7.1 grams per bowl. I definitely know which one I'd rather have!

I wouldn't recommend this product, even for big porridge fans.
