Book Description

26 April 2012
In this remarkable dual memoir about family, faith, and friendship, film legend Martin Sheen and his son Emilio Estevez share their stories. Spanning nearly 50 years of family history, the book chronicles the remarkable lives of two creative talents, Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez. It's a story of father and son set against the backdrop of Hollywood; this narrative is organized around their physical and spiritual journey along the Camino de Santiago, Spain, the thousand-year-old pilgrimage path which traverses Galicia. It is the area from which Sheen's father emigrated to the U.S. and to which Estevez's own son has returned. "Along the Way" will focus not just on the lives these men have chosen as artists, but also (and most importantly) on the one they have lived together. It is a story of family bonds and artistic advances and setbacks; of good choices and hard choices; of opportunities lost and opportunities found. Sheen and Estevez will share what they have experienced and learned from each other in their forty eight years as father and son, as fathers of sons, as actors and director, as spiritual seekers, and as concerned citizens of the world. Readers will meet them as real people rather than icons, as two men who have accumulated decades of wisdom and insight they are now ready to share.

5.0 out of 5 stars An autobiography with a difference 23 Jun 2012
I was really surprised by what a great read this was. It's an autobiography with a difference. There's a lot of love, life and truth in the experiences of Martin Sheen (aka Ramon Estevez) and his son Emilio Estevez, from Martin Sheen's beginnings as a struggling actor with a young family to support to his adventures in the Phillipines on the set of Apocalypse Now. The story charts the ups and downs of family life, and of trying to find one's vocation and of defining one's true self within community. I was left feeling grateful to Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez for sharing their life lessons, which were ultimately enriching and spiritually uplifting. There were a lot of profound messages in the book, particularly in lieu of Sheen & Estevez's experiences filming Ghandhi in India. I was sad to finish the book and leave the Estevez clan behind. Both father and son came across as enlightened and sound individuals with enormous personal integrity, whom it would be a pleasure to meet. It was a pleasure to spend time in their company through this book.

I enjoyed the book. I could not make head nor tail of the film Apocalpyse Now. I was a little better informed about the logic, if there was any, about the film. It was good in the insights it gave to the relationship between father and Son and the way that they perceived events so differently in which they had both participated. I handed the book for a dear friend to read who is having clashes with his son over the direction the son has taken with his life. My secretary met her husband on the Camino. So there were a whole load of elements going through the book that entered into my mind and to which i could relate. It is not much of a review. Above all, it was a mostenjoyable read and has beeen appreciated by those to whom I have recommended it. Sorry about the signature but this seventy year old is not capable of adapting to new technology. You can see that from my previous attempts at purchases.
God bless,
Pat Pow

This book is a must have.
The real life ups and of a father and son who have worked hard to deal with the challenges in life.
The honesty in which they discuss the highs and lows makes it interesting and shows that we are all human.
