EXCELLENT. If you want to hear local folk collier songs in genuine northern geordie/northumbrian dialect this is the one. Lou Killen/Johnny Handle/High Level Ranters are surely the best exponents of these songs. This is real dialect not " posh geordie ", and I have lived up here for 66 years so know the real thing. You get whole stories of real episodes in Newcastle and area mining history as illustrated by " The Blackleg Miner", or "The Trimdon Grange Explosion." You can learn about working on the busty and brockwell seams .....miners' pay......and so on. It takes real Tynesiders or Northumbrians to get the rrrrr burr sound right. Wonderful musical accompaniment of banjo, concertina, guitar, melodeon, accordion,,fiddle, and never to be forgotten tin whistle and Northumbrian pipes of Colin Ross.

English Folk music is a rich tradition and this incredibly good release illustrates that the North of England produced some gems of originality in this tradition.
This is a very interesting release that combines three original albums together. The first and second album were recorded in 1962 and released on the Topic Label. The first album was "Northumbrian Garland" by Louis Killen. The second was "Stottin doon the Waall" by Johnny Handle. Both albums were later re issued together and given the title "Along the Coaly Tyne". For this CD re issue of "Along the Coaly Tyne" more tracks have been added from the last and third album "Ramblin Lads" recorded in 1976 by the High level Ranters.
Together they make up a release that celebrates the Traditional folk songs,or Traditionally styled more recent folk songs, that are unique to the area of the North of England around Northumberland, Durhum, Newcastle and Geordie areas. The songs come from, or reflect the working class industrial heritage with strong focus on the life of Mineers and Collier workers.
It is a wonderful raw and gritty sound full of living, culture and tradition. There are some great song choices with an authentic Northen feel to them. They are performed with regional dialect and phrasing and they tell the stories of the lives of the local people. The songs include "The Colliers rant", "Blackleg Miners", "The Collier lad", "Dance to yer Daddy" and "The Keilder Hunt".
There is rich sound with instruments including banjo, English Concertina, guitar, melodeon, piano, whistle, fiddle and Northumbrian pipes. There are fine vocals and the whole disc sounds great despite the age of the recordings. This is an important recording and adds much to the preservation and richness of English Traditional Folk Music.
