Most Helpful Customer Reviews

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAMETOP 10 REVIEWER on 23 Aug 2011
Format: Audio CD
Originally released about ten or twelve years earlier, this CD was re-packaged in 2011 as a set (Along came Jones, Atomic, Green green grass of home, Delilah) as X4 Tom Jones, with each CD in its own cardboard case but no liner notes or credits beyond the actual track listings.

The big hit here is, of course, It's not unusual, which became an international best-seller. Nobody else can match Tom on this song if they attempt to do a faithful cover, though there are other ways to record this song; indeed, the song was apparently written as a swaying jazzy song with Sandie Shaw in mind. Sandie rejected the song, so giving Tom the breakthrough he was seeking after a prior single (Chills and fever) flopped. After Tom's success with the song, Jackie Trent (on her album Magic of Jackie Trent) slowed the song right down. In 2011. Jazz singer Clare Teal included a version on her album Hey Ho, which was different again. There's an old saying that a great song can be interpreted any number of different ways, and such is the case with It's not unusual.

As Tom recorded It's not unusual, its style is R+B, and there's a lot of that on this album, although it is less evident in some of his later music. While most of the music here was clearly aimed at teenagers, his management decided subsequently to focus on the adult market.

Once upon a time, the follow-up single to It's not unusual, was only a minor UK hit itself. Even on this album, there are hints at what was to come later via Autumn leaves and The rose.

One song that surprised me here is the Skye boat song. Tom gives this traditional folk song the R+B treatment.
