Book Description

6 July 2012 Thorndike Romance

“Wit, passion, and adventure, Elizabeth Boyle has it all!”
—Julia Quinn

New York Times bestselling RITA® Award winner Elizabeth Boyle is a wonder, and with Along Came a Duke—the first book in her delectable Rhymes with Love series based on well-known nursery rhymes—she proves once more that no one writes wittier, more endearing and original historical romance. Returning once more to England during the colorful Regency Era, Boyle transports readers to the small town of Kempton, where a local curse prevents the female residents from wedding—a fact that cannot deter a plucky young heiress who needs to marry to inherit her fortune, as she strikes out for London to wed a rakish and unsuspecting duke. Funny, touching, and wonderfully sensuous, Along Came a Duke is a prime example of the exceptional romantic magic that puts Elizabeth Boyle in the same master class as Lisa Kleypas and Christina Dodd.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun Regency Romp 20 Jun 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the story of the devil-may-care + handsome Duke of Preston and his reluctance in dining alone, a country spinster Tabitha Timmons ( or his Tabby) and her dog, Mr. Muggins, an irish terrier (maybe) and his penchant for chasing after feathers ! In order to inherit a vast fortune, Tabby must marry a man chosen by her deceased uncle and Preston will do everything possible to save his Tabby from a dull marriage, even if it's going to take him quite a while to acknowledge his true motives behind his sudden interest in Tabitha's future.
It's a merry chase that goes back and forth from the country to London that resembles an old fashion comedy of manners.
The writing is fast paced and witty and the banter between h\h is fun to watch.
Standard fare, but highly enjoyable !

5.0 out of 5 stars Cinderella And Love 7 May 2012
By Arwen - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Elizabeth Boyle pens a delightful historical that, while slow in some spots, delivered what I most like about historical romances--flippant conversation complete with games of cat-and-mouse.

This retelling of Cinderella begins with our heroine in dire need of rescuing only she's staying where she is because she doesn't want to be a burden. She's an intelligent girl with some quirky friends (who were already being set up for the next two books).

Our hero is the Duke of Preston who has been an ass. Sorry but there's really no better way to put that. I found him a bit unlikeable at first, but the revelation of why won me over.

The story hinges on a dead relative, a will and family members willing to do what it takes to keep their hands on her money. Tabitha is a bit simple at first but once she gets her head into the game, she is willing to do what it takes to keep their hands off her money. Even if that means letting the Duke of Preston ruin her.

The romance is slow and sweet with enough heat to keep it going. I didn't want to put this book down.

For those that like a Georgette Heyer feeling to their romance, I highly recommend this one. The cast of characters never overwhelmed and I found myself quite in love with Mr. Tibbets.

3.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming 24 May 2012

I'll admit that I am picky when it comes to romance novels. I love an engrossing fantasy, but I like my fantasy believable and well written. Unfortunately, Along Came a Duke: Rhymes With Love falls short on both points. The plot is so overdone (woman inherits a fortune from a long lost relative! A rakish duke must find a wife! They chase, hide from and chase each other!) that it quickly became tiresome. I realize that there are only so many variations you can do on a historical romance, but I just couldn't get very interested in this one.

The writing itself is fine - there are some slow moments, which I don't mind when they are interesting (these aren't), and there are far too many overused phrases.

Overall, this book is a big "meh". It's fine if you are running out of books to read or you want something to fill a long flight, but it certainly won't go on my shelf of romance novels to re-read over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love, love, loved it! 23 Jun 2012

"Miss Timmons, I never regret a good sin." "...Is there such a thing?" "Miss Timmons, if you have to ask, then you haven't found the right one." This is when I officially fell in love with Christopher Seldon, the Duke of Preston. I loved this book for several reasons, but mainly for the dialogue between the H/h. They truly fell in love, and didn't just fall into bed. I don't get why some of the other reviewers didn't like this one, but I loved it, and will preorder the next in the series as soon as I can!

2.0 out of 5 stars DNF - Never engaged 13 Aug 2012

I've tried several times to finish this. I used to really enjoy Boyle's books and I'm not sure if she's changed or I have. I can't get more than three chapters in to Along Came a Duke despite numerous tries. The opening chapter sets the tone for the rest of the novel, so download the sample if you're on the fence. Our heroine's dog chases and ruins expensive feathers, so when meeting a new person one of the heroine's friends quickly removes the feather from said person's attire, saying "you'll thank me later" (or something like that). If this strikes you as amusing, Along Came A Duke may please you more than it did me. I found it tedious. The heroine is a bit of a martyr and the hero is a case of arrested development. That makes sense for a duke, but this is one of the least powerful dukes you could imagine. He's not a selfish man because no one holds him responsible, he's a whiner because he likes whining. From the domineering family that houses our poor relation to the frustrated family surrounding the duke, there was no one for me to root for.

4.0 out of 5 stars mischievous man 11 July 2012

Along Came A Duke
Reviewed by Suzanne & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog

'The same day that the very respectable vicar's daughter Miss Tabitha Timmons tells the insufferable, yet horribly alluring Mr Preston that she has no need to get married, she finds herself unexpectedly engaged to a gentleman she has never met. But she can't get the enticing Mr Preston and the feelings he evokes in her out of her mind and another chance encounter that ends with a wager and a kiss leaves not only Tabitha's head spinning.

This is my first Elizabeth Boyle read, but it won't be my last as I am already impatiently awaiting the next book in this series! For me, this had everything I love about a light hearted historical romance; a spunky heroine not afraid to speak her mind; a cute dog; witty and fun dialogue that had me grinning and a hero I can daydream about.

After that glowing praise it may seem strange that I didn't give the book a higher rating, but the reason for this is that Preston, the hero of the book, took me some time to warm to. At the beginning I found Preston to be childish and thoughtless but as the book went on he grew on me. I think it was a combination of his charm, which shines through the pages, and Ms Boyle adding some maturity to his character as the book progresses, making him seem less like a delinquant boy and more like a mischievous man, something that was far more attractive.

What I also like about this book, was although it wasn't a particularly steamy and there was never any long graphic sex scenes, it had instead a build of sexual chemistry and connection between the Tabitha and Preston. Although, in true romance style, they hadn't seen eachother all that often they seemed like old friends and I always felt like they belonged to one another.

I really enjoyed this book, if you are looking for fun, light hearted and romantic read, something akin to Julia Quinn, then you should pick this book up. '
