1.0 out of 5 stars So bad it's good? No, even worse than that!, 4 Jan 2006

I'd seen a lot about how unbelievably bad this film was.
I made the mistake of thinking that a film that was so incredibly bad had to be worth watching for comedy value. DON'T make the same mistake I did!
The plot is very flimsy and simple, but because of the directing and editing it's extremely hard to follow.
The obligatory sex scene feels tacked on (it just randomly happens and ends just as quickly).
...And I have never known a director make action sequences so dull that I just tuned the movie out! I can't explain it; A big aliens-esque battle sequence starts, the bullets and blood are flying (often presented in OTT bullet-time and CGI), and then, 5-10 mins later, I stop planning tomorrow's shopping list and remember I'm still watching the film.
Most annoyingly, there are scenes that have been shamelessly lifted from other films and slotted in here. Most notably, Aliens, which Uwe Boll not only steals ideas and entire scenes from, but insults with his poor imitation!
I honestly think this is one of the worst films I have EVER seen, and it annoys me that the director is still allowed to carry on butchering video-game licences with his appalling film-making skills.
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously boring, 16 Jan 2006

I rented this in the hope it might have that "so bad it's good factor". But Alas, it doesn't. It's a boring travesty of a film. Also, despite the title it has nothing to do with the video game. Why didn't they make the story from the game?

2.0 out of 5 stars Best left alone!, 30 Oct 2005

This review is from: Alone In The Dark [DVD] (DVD)
I really wanted to like Alone in the dark, based on the hugely popular computer game series. Having played the Dreamcast game I was hoping that the film would have the same sense of creepiness. The game was set on a creepy almost deserted island exploring a spooky mansion in near total darkness. It gave a sense of dread of what was going to happen next, or jump out from the dark, with plenty of areas to explore. However the film is set in a city and loses the scary atmosphere within the games. It becomes more of an action film similar to Aliens, rather than a creepy atmospheric horror.

It has some good scenes especially some of the special effects shots, a great bullet time sequence near the start. However the story and plot let it down a great deal and it doesn't seem to be closely related to the games at all. It centres around the idea of a professor who has researched an ancient civilization, trying to find a way of opening a portal for the creatures of darkness to enter the world! Mainly It just builds from one action scene to the next. Starring Tara Reid, Christian Slater and Stephen Dorff, I would expect this to be more high profile but once you watch it you can see why it went straight to DVD!

The disc has a commentary, A 7min behind the scenes feature, sadly lacking a comparison to the games! A 9min feature on the special effects used, storyboard comparison and 5 music videos. Overall 5/10 for die hard fans only, but worth a rent!
