Edward Carnby returns for the fourth outing in the series, whose search for his friend Charles Fiske who disappeared after investigating a family shrouded in sinister rumour, takes him to their foreboding family estate, on the imaginatively titled Shadow Island.
If you are a fan of the original series or its myriad derivatives, you'll recognise the setting and style of play. The decrepit old house is hardly a novel setting for the genre but what adds to otherwise standard fare, is some slick graphics and a rather nifty lighting system.
You will notice almost immediately that the house is for the most part, fairly dark and unfortunately you are far from alone; your flashlight is fundamental in both discovering items and areas and in fending off the hordes of light sensitive nasties that lie in wait just out its range.
Tackling creepy denizens in this way makes a refreshing change from simply blasting your way through a host of creatures and you have to choose paths carefully. It is not a monumental change in survival horror gameplay, but Darkworks' lighting system makes for a nice variation and is a shining example of how to build up the atmosphere.
Eerie sound, an unprecedented lighting system and superior graphics do much to create an unsettling mood and The New Nightmare is certainly a competent addition to the survival horror genre. --Tae Mawson
The original survival horror franchise continues with a pure blend of intense action and suspenseful adventure. Alone in the Dark immerses the player into a dark and strange atmosphere where conventional rules do not apply. The player must overcome his natural fear of the dark unknown and control Edward Carnby through a deep and highly detailedstoryline.Armed with a flashlight and a pistol, Carnby must find the necessary items to survive as well as the clues which will help him escape his ultimate nightmare.

Bored of the Dark!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (PC CD) (Video Game)
Of all the games I have played, this has got to be the worst - not so much the game play but the appalling lack of real control of the character. The geometry engine is crude - better object manipulation and control was achieved within the original! The controls are fiddly inasmuch as when trying to perform critical actions (or any other for that matter) one's character must be precisely placed or nothing happens - I found myself having to save and restart so often that I gave up on the game as a consequence of the tedium involved. The original game was, without a doubt exceptional. This latest excursion, however, appears to have been written by the proverbial million chimpanzees using a hammer and chisel, let alone a PC! The only problem I have now, is that I am the owner of three rather expensive, shiny flat frisbees!

could be better,

the atmosphere is perfect. I really liked some of the integrated movies and effects like the one right at the beggining with the cementary gate or dogs. controls can drive you mad at times. If you are not 100% sure that you have to push something or to pick up something from somewhere you are 99% likely to overlook it because of control precision problems. I dont like "saving the world" idea, it's just pompous and makes me dislike the story. I would enjoy some local mysteries to be solved - but saving the mankind makes me ROTFL and destroys the climate. I dont like the 'image' of Aline and Cornby. The first one can hardly move because of too tight clothes while the second one wears too big rags and moves like a monkey. Plus for the quality of dialogs - even non-native speakers can easilly follow. And once again - the atmosfear is great. It's not overloaded with aliens you have to kill and it's the climate that scares you to make a new step. But it would have been much better if the monsters had not been popping up just from the air - why arent they coming from cupboards, from behind the curtains, from bushes etc?

Had potential to be great.,

I purchaesd this game many years ago now and lent it to a mate. I never got it back. I have bought it again and now can realise why it annoyed so much. The graphics are pretty good with the exception of the character animations. The control system is disgusting and can sometimes lead you to insanity. The story is quite engorssing and it has quite a few scares for those who are affected by a chiling atmosphere and a uncertain feeling when entering the next room. Overall ok to play once and then it should be locked in the vault along with the rest of the lost souls.
