Product Description

Horror based on the best-selling computer game. Christian Slater plays private investigator Edward Carnby, a detective who specialises in supernatural phenomena. While investigating the mysterious death of one of his best friends, Carnby uncovers a conspiracy to bring back a race of evil demons known as the Abskani to take over the world. With his ex-girlfriend Aline (Tara Reid) and rival Richard Burke (Stephen Dorff), Carnby is all that stands between the Abskani and world domination. But with his fragile psyche beginning to crack after an encounter with an evil spirit known as the Queen, can Carnby save the world before he breaks down completely?

1.0 out of 5 stars So bad it's good? No, even worse than that! 4 Jan 2006
I'd seen a lot about how unbelievably bad this film was.
I made the mistake of thinking that a film that was so incredibly bad had to be worth watching for comedy value. DON'T make the same mistake I did!
The plot is very flimsy and simple, but because of the directing and editing it's extremely hard to follow.
The obligatory sex scene feels tacked on (it just randomly happens and ends just as quickly).
...And I have never known a director make action sequences so dull that I just tuned the movie out! I can't explain it; A big aliens-esque battle sequence starts, the bullets and blood are flying (often presented in OTT bullet-time and CGI), and then, 5-10 mins later, I stop planning tomorrow's shopping list and remember I'm still watching the film.
Most annoyingly, there are scenes that have been shamelessly lifted from other films and slotted in here. Most notably, Aliens, which Uwe Boll not only steals ideas and entire scenes from, but insults with his poor imitation!
I honestly think this is one of the worst films I have EVER seen, and it annoys me that the director is still allowed to carry on butchering video-game licences with his appalling film-making skills.

2.0 out of 5 stars Best left alone! 30 Oct 2005
By DVD Fan
I really wanted to like Alone in the dark, based on the hugely popular computer game series. Having played the Dreamcast game I was hoping that the film would have the same sense of creepiness. The game was set on a creepy almost deserted island exploring a spooky mansion in near total darkness. It gave a sense of dread of what was going to happen next, or jump out from the dark, with plenty of areas to explore. However the film is set in a city and loses the scary atmosphere within the games. It becomes more of an action film similar to Aliens, rather than a creepy atmospheric horror.
It has some good scenes especially some of the special effects shots, a great bullet time sequence near the start. However the story and plot let it down a great deal and it doesn't seem to be closely related to the games at all. It centres around the idea of a professor who has researched an ancient civilization, trying to find a way of opening a portal for the creatures of darkness to enter the world! Mainly It just builds from one action scene to the next. Starring Tara Reid, Christian Slater and Stephen Dorff, I would expect this to be more high profile but once you watch it you can see why it went straight to DVD!
The disc has a commentary, A 7min behind the scenes feature, sadly lacking a comparison to the games! A 9min feature on the special effects used, storyboard comparison and 5 music videos. Overall 5/10 for die hard fans only, but worth a rent!

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring In The Dark 19 July 2006
This is possibly the worst computer game tie in ever, boring actors(who wish they were elsewhere), a dull script and all around dull standard; it seems to me that the studio bosses who make these features think that people who love the game will love the film; WRONG; it never happens like that.

1.0 out of 5 stars Please don't buy/rent this movie! 14 Feb 2006
I don't usually write reviews but after watching this on DVD yesterday I felt compelled to do so. This is quite simply, the worst film I have ever seen. After the longest "Star wars" type scroll in movie history, the film starts badly and gets worse. The plot is impossible to summarise because there isn't one. It seems as if the director copied elements of other movies and hoped for the best - One second its The Matrix, then Alien, then X-Files etc...
The acting is poor to say the least, while the casting is laughable - Tara Reid as a archaeologist?!?!!
My girlfriend and I rented this on DVD because the cover and synopsis looked good - please don't make the same mistake.
I would give this film No Stars if I could.

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously boring 16 Jan 2006
By James Burnwood VINE VOICE
I rented this in the hope it might have that "so bad it's good factor". But Alas, it doesn't. It's a boring travesty of a film. Also, despite the title it has nothing to do with the video game. Why didn't they make the story from the game?

2.0 out of 5 stars AWFUL 19 May 2006
I sat down to watch this with the write up looking interesting. It wasn't!

Christian Slater plays a psychic investigator that for an unexplained reason in the film starts off with some sort of artifact. He takes this item to Tara Reid who works in a museum & they have other artifacts that the professor (who seems to have been taken over by the cretures) has collected. Stephen Dorf heads a government department that i'm still not sure if Slater worked for but the story makes out that he did who are fighting creatures that Slater & Reid end up fighting. I'm still not sure what sure what the creatures are but they don't like the light & can take over a host body.

The description sounds vague but i'm still not sure what actually happened in this film. The story was weak, the actors didn't seem that into the roles they were playing, + the badly timed & random love scene between Slater & Reid was quite pointless as the story never really defines their relationship in the film, they just seem to have history.

I got up 3 times during this film to do other things. From a girls point of view it might be worth a watch to see Slater looking good & walking round in a vest for most of the film but there isn't much else to watch it for. The effects start out good but then look rubbish later in the film & their use of fake blood is gaudy. No story, no skill, no heart & no soul.

The only reason that I've given this film 2 stars is that i am a fan of Slater's acting, but even that doesn't cut it in this film.
