Review

'Superior and scary... with an ingenious sting in the tale.' DAILY TELEGRAPH 'The mistress of the skillfully-spun suspense novel... her quiet, unemphatic style of narrative makes the story a compelling read.' SUNDAY TELEGRAPH 'Yorke, a steely mistress of the matter-of-fact presentation of household horrors, has never written a more artfully assembled chiller.' SUNDAY TIMES 'Her admirers prefer Margaret Yorke to P.D James and Ruth Rendell... if you're not yet a fan of Margaret Yorke you are in for a treat.' EVENING STANDARD 'This book, apart from being very enjoyable as a thriller, is also an interesting look at how random crime can mark and scar not just the immediate victims, but the wider social circle/ And that, along with the quality of the writing, makes this a very superior thriller indeed.' IRISH TATLER 'Powerful... Around the simple premise Yorke has woven her usual absorbing pattern in which respectability and the commonplace are masks for the darkness of the mind that lurks beneath.' THE TIMES 'Terrifically class for a mistress of her craft.' MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 'A compellings story- it deals with the motives of the criminals as well as the victims of violence.' FAMILY CIRCLE 'Once started, this psychological thriller will not be cast aside.' PUBLISHING NEWS 'Margaret Yorke never fails to dig deep into the minds of both crimimal and victim, and with this book she lives up to her reputation as a master of suspense and a writer of great psychological insight.' THE LADY 'The writer who has been compared to P.D James and Ruth Rendell has produced a novel which reflects with frightening accuracy the real-life dramas faced by people in Britain every year.' HUDDERSFIELD DAILY EXAMINER

Product Description

During a burglary, a young woman is raped. The fact that her father made no attempt to protect her shatters the family more than the actual violation. When the rapist is freed, one of the family decides to apply their own justice.

Margaret Yorke captures her reader's attention immediately with the break in at a house and rape of a young girl. The girl and her family are torn apart by the tragic events of that night and go their separate ways. The girl blames her father for not trying to help her and, racked with guilt, her father sets out on the dangerous path of revenge.

Unputdownable 3 Jun 2008

In my opinion, this is Yorke's best book. Intriguing and gripping while addressing some most interesting ethical issues, it clatters at breakneck pace towards its unguessable and breathtaking conclusion.

A Father's Worst Nightmare 3 April 2011
By SmartGirl - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Again, Yorke is excellent in giving us a story of an average family, impacted by a horrible crime, and the fallout which is anything but what you would expect. A father is home with his teenaged daughter when a burglar breaks in and rapes her. The father is tied up, the burglar has a gun, so he begs his daughter not to resist. Still, she fights hard, despite his warnings. When it is done, she can never forgive him, and neither does the wife who was not home at the time, and the family breaks up. The father cannot forgive himself until he avenges the crime and gets his family back. But can a low-key, mild-mannered, accountant used to playing by the rules go outside the law and take care of business? The story is compelling: should he have died trying, or was it best to expect her to recover from the rape? Great suspense, compelling drama, and all wrapped up in a story barely more than 200 pages. I loved it!
Almost the Truth 3 Feb 2010

Margaret Yorke shows us that every human heart has its grey area and finds the literary spark in even lacklustre personalities. She is truly a master of the cozy English mystery, but lets in the cold sensible air of modern life to an amazing degree. You'll find you don't want to put her little paperbacks down until she is finished with you.

Nasty crime 9 Oct 2002
By Beverly C. Sanders - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Rape is such an ugly topic to talk about but this author, Margaret Yorke did such a wonderful job of exposing some of the unfortunate side effects from such an injury.
After I read the book Paradise Wild by Johanna Lindsey, I read this book. Each speaks about a character who is raped. Please read my review on Paradise Wild. This book treats rape the right way.
