Product Description

Matt Brennan, a brilliant young investment banker in the City of London, is celebrating his greatest deal yet: orchestrating a mega-merger that will transform the electronics industry. He is rich and successful beyond his wildest hopes.

But his personal life is a mess.

Fed up with his constant work, his wife is about to walk out on him.

And he is plagued by mysterious dreams ...of the Inquisition.

When Matt travels to Carcassonne in Southern France to buy a house he hopes will put his marriage and his life back together, he is plunged into the mysteries of the Cathar Sect, a fanatical branch of mediaeval Catholicism also known as the 'the Perfects'.

As he unlocks their secrets, his life is at stake.

And Matt Brennan is about to discover that no man, and no religion, is ever perfect.

'Almost Perfect' is an enthralling thriller that straddles the centuries with consummate skill. It combines the plotting of Dan Brown, with the action of Steve Berry, and historical knowledge of Kate Mosse, and the story-telling of Lee Child.

'A knock-out book. John Childress is at the top of his game.” - Matt Lynn, author of the best-selling Death Force thrillers.

“A brilliant, thrilling combination of the ancient and modern.” - Tom Kasey, best-selling author of Trade Off.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and fun. 1 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a book that takes you by the hand and immediately leads you on an exciting adventure into the depths of a centuries old mystery, Dan Brown style! I loved the way the story went back and forth from the present day to the past and the more the protagonist discovers about his past, the more it affects his future. I like the fact that the book is (largely) historically accurate and gives you a history lesson whilst taking you on a thrill ride. John Childress helps to make his book relatable by setting it an all too familiar climate of a struggling economy with a protagonist who, like any of us, works hard but struggles with their personal/social life. I was able to guess some of the events that would unfold during the story but it didn't make it any less gripping to read. This book is suitable for lovers of many genres such as history, fiction and horror, which makes it a really fantastic read. Childress may still have a way to go to be Dan Brown or Lee Childe (most authors do), but this book was a real find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid story line! 31 Aug 2012
By Ian H
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book portrays a blend of past and present, links French history and British present and all this is expertly intertwined with eerie sense of haunting enigma that unfolds page by page. The book shares an aura of knowledge in form of story, a tone of refinement and a sensation of bracing insight into the environment of fear and pain brought on by medieval inquisition, witch hunt and heresy. And yet, author does very well to connect such a gruesome past with characters in the book who are set in modern day metropolis London and leafy French countryside.

This is a very readable book about an important aspect of history, intricately depicted in a plot that keeps the reader on the edge of curiosity which can only be soothed by finishing the book. I certainly could not put the book down until I reached the last page. If you love history and mystery, you will love this book. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, but not quite. 26 Aug 2012
By Rachel
Format:Kindle Edition
Almost Perfect breathes some new life into the Dan Brown/Kate Mosse religious conspiracy thriller. His subject is the Cathars, a medieval catholic sect that flourished mainly in South-West France, and which were also known as the Perfects, which I guess is where the title comes from. A disillusioned banker moves to that part of France to get away from the stresses of the City, but soon finds himself caught up in a conspiracy that spans the centuries. The author has researched the book well, though the main objective of book is to entertain rather than educate. In a sense the book is almost perfect in that Childress isn't quite at Dan Brown's level yet.
