Product Description

Guilio Sacchi (Tomas Milian) is a small-time hood disillusioned with the crime syndicate for which he works. Looking to make some big money fast, he and some friends kidnap the beautiful Marilù (Laura Belli), the daughter of a billionaire and demand 500 million Lira as ransom. However, hot on his heels is Inspector Grandi (Henry Silva) a hardened cop who only becomes more hell-bent on catching Guilio and his gang with each corpse he finds! Director Lenzi reflects on the Years of Lead in Italy, a time when terrorists caused chaos and police action was judged as deficient. Almost Human is one of Umberto Lenzi's (Cannibal Ferox, Oasis of Fear) best and most highly-regarded films, featuring a standout performance from Milian and score composed by Ennio Morricone.

This Shameless Screen Entertainment release will be a must-have for all lovers of Euro-crime and polizieschi movies.

- English & Italian original Audio with English Subtitles

Almost perfect! 26 Aug 2011
Format:DVD
Long famed mostly as the director of "Cannibal Ferox" Umberto Lenzi is clearly more than a one-hit wonder and if you're a distractor this might be a nice place to start down the path to appreciating the man's versatile career beyond his most infamous venture, while not as gory as its jungle based counterpart this film hits harder and its largely down to the infamous Tomas Milian who plays his part with demented fury (apparently aided by large quantities of vodka!). "Almost Human" follows a rather petty and pathetic two bit criminal (Milian) who at the start, beaten and humiliated by a crime boss for screwing up a bank heist you could actually really pity, don't get used to this feeling! Soon after, sick of risking his neck for loose change he embarks on an overly ambitious scheme kidnapping the daughter of a wealthy businessman assisted by two friends (one of whom is Ray Lovelock), first they need guns and Milian knows just where to get them blasting to pieces the dealers (supposedly his friends) before paying them, this is just a hint of the sadistic fury bottled up through years of failure and mediocrity about to be unleashed on an unsuspecting Rome and its innocent citizens. From there all hell breaks loose as Milian starts torturing and slaughtering his way through every opposition or potential threat awaiting his big payoff with his buddies increasingly uneasy about his conduct, on the other side of the law is hard boiled cop Henry Silva who is determined to take down the mystery criminal leaving trails of blood and destruction in his wake and he begins to suspect just who the man is, of course it all comes to a pretty rough end.

Cult favourite Luciano Martino produces while Ernesto Gastaldi writes and the icing on the cake is the brilliant Ennio Morricone score. Although classed as an action-crime film which puts off many a fan of Italian cult cinema who usually favour horror and giallo I really think its worth a watch, it was the deciding factor in getting me into Italian crime cinema which I was still partially in doubt of. To sum up this is a brilliant movie, tough, rough, fast, stylish and hard hitting and in my personal opinion an Italian action classic rivalled only by Enzo G Castellari's equally brilliant Street Law [1974] (NTSC) [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] which if you liked this film is a must have or vice-versa.

Now to versions, the old US NoShame release which I own is in my opinion the best version to get though it is now discontinued and pricey, the new version from Shameless has the same great transfer and the half-hour Tomas Milian interview, the only disadvantage being you miss another half-hour interview featuring Lenzi and Lovelock among others and a collectors booklet, instead Shameless have a subtitle fact-track and reversible covers and the first 1000 copies have a holographic moving front cover so I guess its up to you whats more important, either way you're in for an experience you won't soon forget!

"Almost Human" sadly remains the only 70's Italian Poliziatteschi film released by Shameless so far but what a great one to start with!

Directed by Umberto Lenzi and starring Italy's busiest actor of the 70's Mr Tomas Milian "Almost Human" has all the staples of great 70's Eurocrime drama! Cue - Car chases galore, violent killings, a hard boiled cop and plenty of gangsters! This is definitely one of the all time great Poliziatteschi films of the 70's.

Tomas Milian plays Gulio Sacchi a career criminal who's latest bank heist hasn't been that successful, when Sacchi's girlfriend mentions the daughter of her rich boss Sacchi get's the idea to kidnap her for ransom, helped along by his 2 sidekicks Sacchi must evade a hard nose cop (Henry Silva) and the suspicions of his girlfriend.

What makes this film so great is the stunning performance by Milian, as the film goes on the more deranged and psychotic he becomes, when he brutally guns down a family in their home for no real reason you half expect the young child of the family to either get away or somehow be reprieved, nope!, even young children get mercilessly slaughtered by the psychotic Sacchi and he gets worse until his glorious downfall at the end ( you didn't expect someone this corrupt to get away did you!..lol)

Nicely directed by Umberto Lenzi and one of his best Poliziatteschi movies, Lenzi was somewhat unfairly thought of as a poor man's Lucio Fulci because of his early 80's horrors like "Cannibal Ferox" and "Eaten Alive" both actually entertaining movies in their own right but fall short of the brilliance of Fulci's films, where Lenzi excelled though was in the Euro-crime Poliziatteschi genre and made 7 or 8 great movies throughout the 70's - for the most part all hard boiled violent crime thrillers and still to this day all sadly unreleased on DVD in either the U.K or the U.S, i really hope someone at shameless releases more of these instead of their usual horror fare. If you can find them and occasionally they pop up on bootlegs recommended are the excellent "Violent Naples" "Rome armed to the teeth" and "The Cynic the rat and the fist" all Lenzi directed and mostly with Milian, Maurizio Merli and John Saxon starring.

This film though is a fine one to kick start your collection of classic Italian crime films. Picture quality is pretty good for the most part and the mono soundtrack is clear and relatively punchy, some of the sound effects sound canned occasionally but this is probably due to all the sound and effects being post dubbed as Italian films from this period were shot without sync sound. The audio options are both the english dub and Italian track, Henry Silva has his own voice in the english dub but the rest of the actors are as usual dubbed. There's a nice 30 min interview with Milian and a fact track which gives you lots of cool trivia on this film and the italian crime movies of this period.

Essential viewing!

almost human 26 Aug 2011
Format:DVD
Henry Silva ventures into giallo in this interesting offering. The main character is so repulsive i felt the title could be "Definitely Not Human". this film contains a depth of personalities that is what one finds in everyday life unlike so many treats churned out in the States. Perhaps big budgets restrain adventure so tried formulae are continuously persued. Some fine performances carry the film.
