Biography

Eighteen months ago, Wakey! Wakey!’s Mike Grubbs had his real life turned in to fiction. For almost a decade, the singer/songwriter had worked as a barman in New York while reconciling his love of classical music with a quest to compose the perfect pop song. He had not long hit on a formula when a call came from the creator of TV series One Tree Hill. Grubbs was offered a recurring role as a… Read more in Amazon's wakey!wakey! Store

Wakey Wakey 1 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD
Wakey Wakey were the supporting band on James Blunt UK tour 2011 & prior to the concert I'm afraid I had never heard of them.
I'm afraid I'm never really into support bands & I normally go so far as to arrive 5 minutes before the main act to miss them. Due to parking at Hammersmith I arrived early & even debated whether to sit in the car for an hour or endure the supporting band. It was cold so I decided to suffer.
One of the best decisions I have made in ages & to say that Wakey Wakey were good is an understatement. They were slick with a professional sound that retained a 'raw' edge which made the audience connect with the band and their music. The vocalist is extremely talented & bravely did a rendition of Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. One of my least favourite 80's classics that is annoying & banal at best. No woman should ever sing this song let alone a man you would think.....wrong!!!! How Michael turnt this trash into a truly beautiful melodic piece of music I do not understand but trust me he did.
The album I have listened to ALL day & I love it. Anyone who reads my reviews will gather I have a very wide taste in music but despite this I cannot compare Wakey Wakey to anyone else. They are truly original & extremely talented.
If you want an album that you will have as a core element of your collect for years to come this is the one. Easy to listen to & most definately grows on you.
My only complaint ...no version of Cyndi Lauper's classic on the album.
Wakey Wakey are going to be very successful so watch this space.

Sitting in Glasgow waiting for James Blunt to come on and start his 2011 World tour, this unassuming band walked out onto the stage. Support band has always the hardest job, as they are playing to a crowd that don't want to hear them and are just itching to get onto the main act. But they had nothing to be fearful off.

They completely blew the roof off. They interacted with the crowd, making it a very intimate and funny session. Their music filled the room with real energic acoustic tunes. A few tracks stood out, particular "Square Peg in a round hole" and "Light Outside". The main front man, was an inspiration, very confident in his ability but yet connected with the crowd with his humor, stories and powerful voice and excellent piano skills.

WakeyWakey are a band to watch for.

This is only the second time that a support band has blown me away at a concert, the other was when AmosLee supported NorahJones and the place fell silent when sang "Arms of a Woman" -- completely unknown at the time.

Good stuff 1 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD
I bought this off the back of seeing the acoustic version of 'brooklyn' on One Tree Hill. Although not as acoustically raw or piano based as I had hoped its still a really good album. It was a lot poppier than I had expected and at times very Scouting for Girls esque but its a grower and there are a handful of really cracking and catchy tunes on it. Anyone in to scouting for girls, the fray, howie day etc etc will love this.
