Review

"People have long cataloged the bizarre writing habits of authors, from P.G. Wodehouse pinning pages on his wall to Dan Brown timing his push-up and sit-up breaks with an hourglass. Now we can add the name Isobella Jade to that collection."– New York Post

"Wizard of self promotion"- Advertising Age

"Isobella Jade would probably hold the record for being Apple's most famous freeloader." - Sydney Morning Herald

Product Description

Confessions of an unconventional model

Isobella Jade is no ordinary model - she is far too short for a start. At ‘almost five foot four’ in heels she found herself shunned by the major agencies and forced to take any job that came her way just to make ends meet.

From nude photoshoots for leering amateur photographers to ‘arty’ crotch shots; from sex toy ads to lingerie shows. This is a tale from the sleazier side of modelling in the heart of New York City.

But is also the story of one woman’s determination to break out into the big time. Isobella becomes an awesome self-publicist, turning up for every photocall, banging on every door, emailing her pictures to every tenuous lead. She won’t take no for an answer.

And gradually it pays off. She starts to get more respectable work. Her face (and arms, hands and feet) start to appear in commercials, on magazine covers, in pop videos. She gets bit parts on Sex & The City, CSI and Life on Mars. She becomes a beauty correspondent and is given her own internet radio show.

Isobella Jade will never be a supermodel but she has forged out a successful career for herself and has collected some remarkable stories along the way.

Isobella wrote the book while still a penniless jobbing model. She couldn't afford a computer or internet connection (she didn't even have a permanent place to live) so would visit the Apple Store in New York every day, log on to one of their computers, and write her story.

Almost 5'4" is an inspirational tale for women of all ages, shapes and sizes. It shows that you can battle against the odds to achieve your dreams and how a bit of hustling and a 'fuck you' attitude can work wonders.

The Model World 17 Mar 2010
By SilentSinger TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I first heard about this book via Heat magazine which is as good as place as any for contemporary fiction. Adapted from her blog it tells the story of Isobella Jade, a wannabe model from rural America who moves to New York City to study marketing and ostensibly to become a model despite her petite stature. The novel follows Isobella's struggle to be taken seriously as a model and details the difficulty she encounters in regard to being taken seriously by photographers and model agents. Isobella decides to try the glamour route and this leads to her branching into clothing design and other related areas.

This book is fairly readable because the author writes well and is extremely candid in her narrative. It doesn't really glamourise nude modelling, in fact it does a fair bit to dissuade any would-be models because it looks disheartening and somewhat dangerous to boot. That being said, I think as a reader you admire Isobella's sheer determination to succeed which manages to alienate friends and family along the way. It's a good read if you're interested in the seedier side of the fashion/modelling world and any related professions.

I loved this book, it was easy to read because it didn't have too much description, it's written at a good pace and it is interesting. It was particularly inspirational to me as i am an aspiring model, and am myself only 5'2". However this book isn't just for people interested in that particular industry as it's a story about Isobella's life and is very readable. I would reccommend this to everyone. =)
