Very useful 9 Jan 2006
Format:Paperback
When I first received this book I was slightly disappointed - my initial impression was that there wasn't much to it, and it wasn't going to teach me much that I didn't already know (I've had a small garden for several years, but have just acquired an allotment).
Then I sat down to order my vegetable seeds for the coming year, and realised I had seriously underestimated it. Although I have a range of books, it was this one that I kept coming back to. It's so clearly laid out - crop rotation is presented very straightforwardly, the cultivation of each vegetable is described and particular varieties recommended, advice is offered on soil preparation and fertilisers, etc.
If you're looking for a glossy coffee-table book to browse from the safety of your sitting room, then this probably isn't it. But if you want a really practical guide to help you with your allotment or vegetable patch, then I recommend this very strongly.

Allotment Gardening 2 April 2006
Format:Paperback
I am a beginner in the art of Allotment gardening and found this book th most helpful for the novice.

It is broken down into concise chapters so your are not overloaded with too much information at any one time.
The gardening calender is a great help as is the herb, fruit and vegetable listings at the end.
A very good choice of book if you are planning to take on an allotment or have just taken one on and need a 'one stop' point of reference.

Berger's book delivers what it says on the cover, except that not only beginners would benefit. The advice is clear and eminently practical - from selecting a spade to finding organic pesticides. The illustrations, print and even the [recycled] paper are pleasing, and the idea of including some well-chosen recipes is inspired. I couldn't recommend it too highly, and see it as the perfect Christmas present for the gardener who's got everything.

Not concise enough
This book is neither one thing nor t'other. It is not a hand-holding guide to setting up your allotment step-by-step, and it is certainly not a reference book. Read more
