Quite a lot of alleged "allotment cookery books" have been published since the start of the allotment boom, and many of them have been, to say the least, a disappointment. Here at last is a book which is both imaginative and useful.

Clearly laid out and easy to follow, with just enough glamourous "window dressing" photos to satisfy modern tastes, it has a picture of each dish and also features "how to" photos which are very useful for the beginner. The book takes you through the seasons of the year, finding imaginative new things to do with your produce (when you've got bored to tears with the usual ones) and has a range of extremely tempting ways of preserving produce, either to deal with a glut, just for variety, or for gifts. In fact this book is especially good on preserving, and here the pictures really make you want to do it.

One thing I particularly like is the mix of traditional favourites which we may well have forgotten, with recipes from round the world which will be new - I've never heard of Argentinian Chimichurri sauce, but this zesty herby accompaniment will go with a wide range of meat and fish. I am very impressed with this book, and both the beginner and the seasoned cook will find a lot of interesting stuff in it. A last touch of gold; the book lies flat on the worksurface so you can use it while cooking without constantly touching it with mucky paws!

For more good stuff in the same area, check out Christopher Lloyd's stimulating Gardener Cook.

I found this book great for winter harvests and getting creative with just a few plain ingredients. Things you would have never considered eating, are not only available in abundance but highly nutruitious. For example nettle soup is a great immune booster and you also clear your gardern in a efficient way. reusing what is general viewed as a "weed". I think it helps give you ideas to change up your meals and utilize crops that grow naturally without maintainance,e.g.dandelion leaves in salads. I believe it has extended my awareness of winter yields and use my patch more resourcfully.
