5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive compilation I've seen yet 14 April 2014
By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Verified Purchase
With 40 tracks covering a period from the mid seventies to the late eighties, this double CD shows that Pussycat were recording excellent music long after they disappeared from the UK charts (after their #1 hit, Mississippi, and its top 30 follow-up, Smile, both of which are here). 32 of the songs were written by Pussycat's songwriter (W Theunissen), including Mississippi and Smile. The eight outside songs include covers of Same old song (a Motown classic), Good year for the roses (a country classic originally recorded by George Jones, which became a UK top 10 pop hit for Elvis Costello) and another song about the famous American river, Roll On Sweet Mississippi, which sounds fantastic along with so many of the songs here.

Mississippi, Georgie, Smile and My broken souvenirs were big hits in Germany, after which Pussycat continued having hits in Holland (their home) and Belgium for a few years. Wet day in September, If you ever come to Amsterdam and Doin' La Bamba are among these hits. It is a pity that Pussycat are mostly just remembered in Britain for Mississippi. Great song as it is, I'm not even sure it's their best, such is the high quality throughout this double CD.

American country singer Barbara Fairchild was in Europe around the time that Mississippi was a big hit, recorded her own version of the song and it became the title track to one of her albums, now available on CD as Mississippi/Free And Easy. As far as I know, that is the only American version of the song.

3. Smile
4. Georgie
5. I'll Be Your Woman
6. Same Old Song

I've always loved Pussycat's well known hits and after buying this double album I'm liking all their lesser know stuff!
Great album.
