Interesting lyrics and a good rhythm make this CD by Poundshop Life a very promising debut. You can catch them live in and around Bristol and I fully recommend the CD. In my view the best track is Helpline closely followed by The Jimmy Riddle.

A very English affair which would totally confuse our American cousins. Welleresque vocals over tinkling guitars catalogue the everyday minutae of Englishness. (Not everyone would know but he actually sings about "serious" matters, too). An enjoyable way to spend your pound. P.S. Barbara Windsor influenced my friend Ray, too, but I'll keep quiet about that.

Poundshop Life's "All expense spared" EP hovers like a happy but deluded albatross over the landscape between eighties new wave and present day indie. The cheery songs with miserabalist lyrics draw on influences ranging from Dylan to Barbara Windsor via The Clash, Ian Dury and Elvis Costello with references, after exchange rate conversion, to Americana bands such as Richmond Fontaine.

The songs, dealing with issues such as ageing, death, cheese, global warming, atheism and the cost of sellotape, are conversational (if you have a lot of conversations where someone rants at you, that is)and convey deep subliminal messages under the guise of being shallow pop songs.

What you get with "All expense spared" is totally transparent (apart from the opaque bits). This is pretty much what they sound like live (check this out on youtube). Cheep and cheerful music for cheap and not vey cheerful times.
