Biography

In the 80s Duran Duran were the most successful new romantic band of the “second British Invasion”, helped by their stylish and sexually charged videos which received heavy play on MTV.

Formed in 1978 by John Taylor (bass) and Nick Rhodes (keyboards) in Birmingham, England, their most successful line-up also included Simon Le Bon (vocals), Andy Taylor (guitar) and Roger Taylor (drums). Between 1980… Read more in Amazon's Duran Duran Store

Product Description

BBC Review

Following massive early success, ego-fuelled side projects, line-up changes and yachting accidents, Duran Duran completed the full rock career trajectory in 1993 with a triumphant comeback. The Ordinary World single and its parent album rekindled public affection and critical acclaim for a band most had consigned to nostalgia shows. Since then the group’s creative flame has flickered fitfully, though 2004’s Astronaut and the Timbaland-assisted follow-up Red Carpet Massacre demonstrated that all was not lost.

For All You Need Is Now, Duran Duran have enlisted another celebrity producer, but this time one who understands them as a fan. Mark Ronson has never been shy about his love for the band, and here he brings out the best in Simon Le Bon’s voice. This is particularly clear on the restrained Leave a Light On; lyrics such as "You ease the lost cause out of me" even brushing the heights of their sublime Come Undone.

They have thankfully stopped seeking credibility, and it suits them. Their calling card here is the garage rock of the title-track (if you can imagine a garage band playing alongside Bentleys), which morphs into a soaring chorus reminiscent of Rio. Scissor Sister Ana Matronic slots perfectly into the disco-flecked Safe, an unashamed return to their original sound. They sound similarly well preserved on the slinky Being Followed, and Girl Panic! also mines their new wave roots.

Unsurprisingly for a band renowned for singles over albums, the 14 tracks include some misfires. Le Bon’s complaint about "glossy lifestyles staring out of magazines," on the plodding Other People’s Lives, particularly riles. Runaway Runaway is throwaway, while the perfunctory funk of Blame the Machines is a heartless grind until its middle eight, reminiscent of Ronson’s recent Record Collection, finds newsreader Nina Hossain telling the listener, "You’re not required to think".

Their Smash Hits days may be as over as Smash Hits itself, and further crossover appeal has probably passed, but their admirable persistence in recording new material has paid off. This album, Mark Ronson’s "imaginary follow up to Rio that never was", is their best for 18 years. --Tom Hocknell

Throughout their career, Duran Duran have had quite a few highs and lows. Most of us rather unfairly remember them for their early 80's heyday although they've never stopped making records, some with greater commercial success than others.

Prior to working on "All You Need Is Now," Duran Duran found themselves without the support of a major record label. Epic Records dropped the band after the lukewarm release of "Red Carpet Massacre" so in order to return to their signature sound they hired self confessed Duranie, Mark Ronson.
Gladly the result is a superb one; "All You Need Is Now" is easily their best collection of songs since 1993's "The Wedding Album."

Lead single "All You Need Is Now" is classic Duran, grooves and rhythms aplenty with a solid chorus. Ballad "Leave A Light On" reminds me of "Save A Prayer" before "Girl Panic" is a likely single release, fast and up-tempo which can currently be found doing the rounds on Radio 2.
A special mention though for "The Man Who Stole A Leopard," a very typical Duran song which borrows heavily from "The Chauffeur" of the "Rio" album.

If you've lost touch with the band over the course of their career, "All You Need Is Now" is good place to pick them up again. Working with Timbaland on their previous record simply didn't work, thankfully though its hats off to Mark Ronson whose production here works wonders, Duran Duran are very much back.
They've been doing decent promotion too, the one night special that aired between Dancing On Ice will do them no harm at all.

If you brought the digital version of the record back in December this physical release is still worth your purchase as theirs enough new tracks present. There's also an abundance of bonus tracks available depending on exactly where you purchased the record.

In summary, "All You Need Is Now" is a superb return to form for Duran Duran.
30 years on, their music is fresh, contemporary and as relevant now as it ever was in the eighties. Forget any stigma you may have attached to the band, "All You Need Is Now" could just be "All You Need Right Now."

5 stars.

Best Duran Duran album I have heard in years (and I have been there from the beginning).

Feel slightly offended by all the "Spiritual follow up to Rio!" comments that I have heard but I suppose it is. It captures a summer vibe "like Rio", has no weak tracks "like Rio", has numerous potential singles "like Rio". I just don't agree that everything in-between should be dismissed.

This is what Astronaut should have been (in itself a very good album, just a little pedestrian).

Like most people "All You Need Is Now", "Girl Panic!", "The Man Who Stole A Leopard" and "Leave A Light On" are all stand out tracks and could all be added to the "Greatest[Hits]" compilation and I hope they are.

I bought the deluxe package which has 16 tracks. I was expecting filler but actually every track is strong and grows on you. The "All You Need.." remix is especially good. "Other People's Lives", "Mediterranea", "Too Bad Your So Beautiful" are all good and better than anything on Red Carpet Massacre". It's all so well textured and balanced.

There are a couple of short instrumentals which I never like to see but they don't spoil the pace of the album or feel like filler which is a miracle.

This is exactly the formula of a classic Duran Duran album. Fast-paced pop with a dash of funk and lashings of atmosphere.

I hope, this time, they follow this with something equally as good, or better still, when the time comes. In the meantime, this will see a lot of play on my stereo.

Thank you very much Duran Duran.

`All You Need Is Now' is Duran Duran's 13th studio album and put quite simply, is easily their best album since `Rio' back in 1982!

Although I have been a fan of this band for some 28 years, I certainly don't live in a Duran Duran bubble, where my obsession clouds my judgement; because I am the first admit that they have made some pretty poor albums over the years. Some fans of the band do have selective hearing and believe that everything Duran Duran creates is music gold, which is simply not true. However, here we have been presented with an album which is 100% pure solid gold! and its sheer quality and brilliance lies in the song writing, which is really saying something for a band who have been around for 30 years. Also, you have to applaud the genius that is Mark Ronson, he has breathed new life into a Duran Duran which had lost its direction slightly with previous album `Red Carpet Massacre', although I personally thought that the album was not bad at all, but the R'n'B sound of that album was not what the fans wanted and it bombed. Mark Ronson came in and reminded the band of their history and completely revived them and their sound. On the whole the album sounds essentially like Duran Duran circa 1981-84, but there are also elements that remind you of the `Notorious' period and even into the 90's with `The Wedding Album'. This album could have so easily ended up sounding dated but it doesn't, as Ronson's production manages to keep it sounding fresh and current.

The albums title track is probably more 90's Duran Duran than 80's, but it's an absolute gem and features a soaring chorus that simply sets the tone for the rest of the album.

`Blame The Machines' is a song inspired by a true story of a man who took his Sat Nav directions too literally and ended up with him driving the wrong way down a one way street! Great pace and drive in this track and I love the guitars and the synths that runs right through it. There is an excellent part in the middle where ITV newsreader Nina Hossain brilliantly provides the dominating voice of the controlling Sat Nav!

`Being Followed' sounds like it could have been on `Rio'. A song essentially about paranoia, it has a totally infectious chorus which compliments the verses wonderfully. Dom Brown's guitars shine again, this time sounding like The Cure at times.

According to many fans the lush `Leave A Light On' sounds like `Save A Prayer', although for me it sounds more similar to the somewhat forgotten great Duran Duran track `Out Of My Mind'. The song is a beautifully constructed, with a laid back, late summers evening vibe, stunning!.

`Safe' is disco funk and features Ana Matronic from the Scissor Sisters with a great rap/vocal which can only be likened to Debbie Harry's on Blondie's `Rapture'. By no means the best song on the album, but by not bad either, its just that some fans have stated that it maybe sounds more like the Scissor Sisters featuring Duran Duran, and they could be right.

`Girl Panic!' is proper classic Duran Duran! It's like it 1981 all over again. Shouts `Hit' at you very loudly and at their peak would have been a massive hit for sure. Someone recently said that it sounded like all of Duran Duran's best singles mashed into one song and that is not far off the mark. Genius!

`The Man Who Stole A Leopard' is my favourite song on the album. What do we have in here?, well there are elements of `Tel Aviv' and `The Chauffeur' and a full orchestra (Conducted by Owen Pallet - Arcade Fire) which just adds to the song and adds a dark atmosphere to the song, words really can't do this track justice. Six minutes of Duran Duran at their very very best, just sit back and immerse yourself into what is set to become an all time Duran Duran classic, it really is quite glorious (Featuring backing vocals by Kelis and News Report by Nina Hossain).

`Other People's Lives' is yet another great moment. A fantastic chorus and also reminds me a little bit of `Great Escape' era Blur!

`Mediterranea' is a shimmery stunner. A mid paced song about getting away from it all, this really could become the new `Ordinary World'.

`Too Bad You're So Beautiful' goes back to the `Rio' era Duran Duran. If you ever loved `Hold Back The Rain and `Last Chance On The Stairway' then you will adore this.

`Runway Runaway' and they just keep on coming, another cracker this, but more of a `Seven & The Ragged Tiger' vibe here. Effortlessly catchy. My only gripe here is that it's over too quickly!

`Before The Rain' is a superb way to end the show, so to speak! Dark and brooding, it slowly builds and builds, right up to the intense marching band drums at the end.

Duran Duran are back to what they do best and lets just hope they decide to stay around for a few more years yet!

***Additional notes***
`A Diamond In The Mind' and `Return To Now' are both very nice short orchestral interludes (based on the albums title track) of just over a minute each. And although they don't really stand out on their own, they do give the album a wonderful flow.
