Product Description

Single mum and superwoman Sally Freeman wants a better life for herself and her son Charlie. But it’s not going to be easy when their home is on a run-down Liverpool council estate.

Just as Sally’s mission to improve their surroundings gets under way, she’s offered a ticket out of there, in the splendid form of Spencer Knight. He has everything she could wish for – the looks, the charm, not to mention the wallet.   But is he the answer to her prayers, or does her hapless ex-boyfriend Johnny still hold the key to her heart?

As Sally decides what to do, she discovers that if The Beatles are right, and all you need is love, then everything else will fall into place.

A delight 21 July 2008
By Best Books To Read TOP 100 REVIEWER

I have read an awful lot of thrillers lately and this was a refreshing change. It's a story about Sally Freeman, a young single mother who lives on a council estate with her son Charlie. Spencer Knight comes along and sweeps her off her feet. He is rich, charming, affectionate and sexy and Sally can't quite believe her luck. However her ex Johnny is still in love with Sally and has to try to win Sally back. As a penniless aspiring painter, who also lives on the estate and cares for his ill mum, he doesn't have a lot of chance.

I am quite a fan of Carole Matthews and this story is no different to my previous opinions. The story is warm and funny and a thoroughly enjoyable read. The characters are a little different to her previously tried and tested formula for leading women. However, somehow she seems to have hit the nail on the head and created loveable people that you end up loving or hating in equal measures. No there isn't a deep underlying moral to the story, but it is what it is! An enjoyable funny and warm chick lit book that is easy reading.

A lovely read 4 Aug 2008

Format:Hardcover
Although 'superwoman' Sally Freeman is the heroine of this book, I think it's the character of Johnny, Sally's on-off boyfriend, who really makes this heart-warming story what it is. Sally is a single mum who wants to give her son, Charlie, a better life. Sally goes on a computer course, where she catches the eye of rich bachelor, Spencer. But Sally is torn between Spencer and Johnny, and I was kept guessing until the very end as to which guy she ends up with. I knew who I wanted her to end up with though! Sally embarks upon a regeneration project of the area where she lives. The story is set in Liverpool, and the detail Carole Matthews gives is fantastic. I think she really does the people of Liverpool justice within the characters she has created. Speaking of which, the characters are all easy to like. Short chapters, narrated by Sally, Johnny and Charlie make this a light read. This is one of Carole Matthews' best books in my humble opinion.

I has previously read Carole's two Chocolate Lovers' books and so I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this. I have to say that I was absolutely hooked from page 1 and really came to like the main characters of Sally,(single mum and superwoman), Johnny, Spencer and Charlie, not to mention the lovely Mrs Kapur, Dora the explorer and the slightly awful Debs! I knew in my heart what I wanted the outcome to be, but it held me gripped and wondering to the last couple of pages. I loved the way Sally developed as a character and saw some of her dreams come true through her own hard work and determination - and it was lovely to see Johnny (one of the nicest men alive) get some much-deserved good fortune in the end.
I love the way Carole writes and the short chapters are lovely - just enough to keep the story going but not so long that you lose track of developments if the old eye lids get heavy at bedtime! I couldn't put this book down and would really recommend it to anyone. It may not be War & Peace but it's a terrific story and one that makes you care about the characters too. I've already bought most of Carole's other books - I can't wait to discover what else awaits me in the pages of her lovely stories! Long may she continue to write and entertain us!
