Confusing voice, 8 Mar 2010
This is the tale of a 10-year-old boy growing up in South Wales, 1968
Now, if you're going to write such a story in the first person, there are, in my opinion, only two ways to 'voice' it; either as an adult refelecting on his childhood, or as the child, recounting things as they happen. Ray French has given us an odd mixture of both, and most worrying of all, not intentionally, at least as far as I can gather.
On the whole he uses the latter format - that of the boy recounting events as they happen - but so often when sharing his story with the reader, he does so as an adult, displaying opinions, views and thoughts that no 10-year-old would ever. I found this aspect incredibly off-putting. It's also the reason I only give it a three star rating.

Ray French's novel is an endearing and humourous evocation of the subterranean world of childhood and how this fragile world, built on betrayal and trust, can collapse.

This review is from: All This is Mine (Paperback)
A compelling novel. Written with such detail and lively dialogue as to allow the reader to very vividly imagine the context in which it is set. Having achieved this, the complex relationships of a child with his family and peers are brought to life. Full of intrigue and often dark humour, I this book very satisfying and would highly recommend it.
