Product Description

With ALL THIS HAPPINESS, the three-time Tony nominee weaves together the pop songwriters and music theatre composers who've had the most profound influence on her; the resulting set, drawn from her sold-out performances in March of 2012 at Feinstein's at Loews Regency, unfolds (to quote The New York Times) as "a prolonged meditation on love and happiness."

Ranging from standards to contemporary fare, the many highlights include Cole Porter's "I Concentrate on You," Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh's "The Best Is Yet to Come," Joni Mitchell's "Help Me," Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love," and Stephen Sondheim's "In Buddy's Eyes."

he Times hailed Kuhn as "the rare singer who can negotiate tricky folk pop lyrics, art songs and popular standards with equal authority and insight." Now, the versatility and command of this amazing actress and singer are showcased in a new studio recording.

I love this woman. I've seen her live, both in cabaret and in shows and she is amazing. Her voice and poise are stunning. She's a very accomplished singer with a unique voice. Anyone who's into musical theatre or good cabaret should buy this and her other albums too!

Stunning, Breakhtaking, Perfect: The Best Work Kuhn Has Ever Done 2 Aug. 2013
By Greg New York City - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I'm very late in reviewing Judy Kuhn's magnificent new recording, ALL THIS HAPPINESS, but it's sheer perfection. I'm not a kneejerk everything Judy does is fabulous (the Styne recording -- weird arrangements sometimes; the Nyro -- those background singers get annoying). However, this recording is sheer perfection from start to finish. Well, okay, one small quibble and that's that the lead off song, Joni Mitchell's Help Me, is a tad weaker than everything that follows (and I love Joni and Court and Spark). But what splendors follow. I think that Kuhn is liberated by not having to focus on one single artist enormously, and it pays off in song after song because, here, she explores the breadth and depth of so many brilliant songwriters.

Jeez, where to even begin with the triumphs here. I Love The Way You're Breaking My Heart -- I didn't know this song at all, and Kuhn is a powerful, well, sex kitten on this one. The Sondheim melding of Happiness into In Buddy's Eyes -- we're all so used to "Sally" from FOLLIES being the coquettish aging, fragile way past ingenue; Kuhn gives In Buddy's Eyes more guts than it's ever had before (with all due respect to Ms. Collins and Ms. Cook) -- she takes a tiny little catch on all of the crucial lines ("and Yes [catch] I miss a lot" etc. and all of a sudden, we're truly seeing a Sally with guts and muscle and sinew, and the song (perhaps my favorite Sondheim song) comes alive again as if for the first time.

Throughout, Kuhn is no longer the ingenue (and we're all the better for it) -- each portrayal (which as Streisand has always said, a song is like a three act play, but while you always see the wheels turning in Streisand's mind vis a vis how she's going to force that three act play, Kuhn on the other hand, without forcing anywhere, truly makes each piece into that real, truthful three act play. She's alternately heartfelt, strong, complicated, unhappy, happy, etc. -- but it's all completely real. I must confess that I saw Kuhn perform this at 54 Below in NYC, so regretfully the listener misses Kuhn's incredible acting abilities -- and boy, has she come a long way baby. And (the big surprise - farewell, Cosette!), Kuhn is powerfully sexy on many pieces here, Cy Coleman's THe Best Is To Come, and most emphatically, on Tom Waits' Temptation and Leonard Cohen's Dance Me To The End Of Love.

And, yet, Judy has not lost her innate ability to totally break your heart. Just listen to Randy Newman's Losing You. So direct, so simple, so right, so cutting to the core of all that's important. Her "Something Cool" is a master class in about four minutes.

And finally, (here the perfect Joni M song), the glorious Night Ride Home (I find it so touching the line "I love the man beside me/He Loves the Open road"' Kuhn has in her own real world placed her husband and her daughter way above her career and you can just feel the love in that line. (That said, I'm glad their daughter is off to college now, because FINALLY Judy is getting opportunity after opportunity, after such a long desert of tiny bits here, a benefit there, a short run here).

ALL THIS HAPPINESS shoots, without qualification into my top ten album list, a list which includes, yes Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark, Jane Olivor's First Night and Stay the Night, Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat, the Ella/Cole Porter Songbook, Ronstadt's Hasten Down The Wind, Nyro's Elis and the TGhirteenth Confession. And folks, that's mighty fine company.

If there was justice in the world, this would be nominated for Best Traditional Pop Album, but that's all about the money and who can crush whom through self-promotion.

Highest recommendation, and if you don't like this, then I'm afraid we simply can't be friends...... Oh, jeez, almost forgot, the brilliant trio backing Kuhn, the three of whom put out more music and more muscle than any full orchestra. I want that percussionist's percussion box (I don't know what it's called -I had never seen one before).

BUY THIS NOW. (And to throw out some cross promotion even though I have nothing to do with any of this PR wise, for god's sake, buy the two disc set of PASSION with this).

More. More. More, Ms. Kuhn and team. You've been way too vastly under recorded. If this were the 70s, Kuhn would have the choice of being a Broadway star or a rock star. And with ALL THIS HAPPINESS (meant literally and figuratively), the listener is blessed with both here.

I could go on and on -

Great voice, Great songs 19 Aug. 2013
By James R. Smith - Published on Amazon.com

This is a terrific selection of varied songs sung by a terrific actress/singer. Kuhn has a wonderfully expressive voice with thoughtful and emotional phrasing. All of her recordings are wonderful (get her Laura Nyro collection right away), but this may be the most enjoyable so far. I hope that she'll continue to record. I love this woman's talent!
