Product Description

Product Description

George Harrison was not only a member of the world's greatest rock band but also a successful solo artist. His guitar technique became the centrepiece of classic Beatles albums and his compositions, both for the group and as part of his own successful solo career, became classics in their own right. Marc Shapiro's account adds insight to George's saddest days, when his wife Patti left him for his best friend, Eric Clapton and also aims to capture George's courage in the face of his devastating cancer. The book contains rarely seen photographs and exclusive news interviews.

From the Back Cover

George Harrison was always known as the 'quiet Beatle' As part of the biggest band in pop history, he took a back seat to Paul McCartney and John Lennon, but his talent shone through in the composition of classic songs such as 'Something' and 'Here Comes The Sun'. In his solo career he occasionally threatened to eclipse both John and Paul on the world stage, and he joined forces with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff lynne to create the massively succsessful supergroup the Traveling Wilburys.

However, the success of his professional life was often met by turmoil in his private life, and the loss of first wife Patti to best friend Eric Clapton, the traumatic attempt on his life by a knife wielding intruder and his final struggle against cancer meant that George Harrison's life was nothing if not dramatic.

Bestselling author Marc Shapiro has exclusively interviewed friends and former colleagues of the enigmatic guitar legend. This revealing biography reaffirms Harrison's importance as an innovative and hugely talented musician and shows that, as a member of the most important band ever, as well as in his mult-faceted career after the Beatles, George Harrison was no ordinary man.

You really can't write a book about a memeber of the most famous group in the world, and not talk to any of the survivors. That is not if you want to have a book that anyone will want to read more than once. I read it cover to cover, and didn't learn anything about George that I didn't already know from reading general Beatles books. With George's life there is a place for a really good biography, with details of his life, beliefs and music. This is not that book.
I tried to post the review without any stars, which it seems is not possible, therefore 1 star for trying (just.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Flawed & brief account of the life of George Harrison, 30 Dec 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: All Things Must Pass: The Life of George Harrison (Hardcover)
Whilst there is little doubt that the author of this book has a love of his subject, the result is a brief, poorly written, error-filled summary of George Harrison, presenting anectdotes & conjecture as hard facts. There is an error on nearly every page & cannot be recommended to any serious student of Beatles lore.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Garbage, 9 May 2003

There should be a law against people like Shapiro. George Harrison dies, and twenty minutes later this "cash in" appears in the shops. No research, other than a solitary interview with Delaney Bramlett, and so many errors, as to make this absolutely worthless.
