Image of Owl City

In the state of Minnesota lies a small town called Owatonna with roughly twenty-two thousand inhabitants; within that city is a quiet road with a modest house. In that house there’s an unkempt basement with no windows. Within those confines you’ll find Adam Young of Owl City hard at work, creating his electronic and melodically infectious brand of music with a simple and singular ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Owl City - All Things Bright and Beautiful 29 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
Haven fallen in love with Owl City a year ago after their success with `Fireflies' and their amazing album "Ocean Eyes", I was hugely looking forward to the release of this- his follow up album- "All Things Bright and Beautiful".

I wouldn't go as far as to say that this album matches the triumphant heights of "Ocean Eyes", but reading through reviews of this album, I certainly wouldn't be as critical as some of the reviewers have been- this album certainly doesn't far too far from the standards expected, and I think the previous albums have set an extremely high bar to reach again.

There are some amazing tracks on this album- `The Yacht Club' is a brilliant, pop anthem which literally sounds like it fell off of "Ocean Eyes" and is one of my favourites on the album, along with `Honey and the Bee' which strips back the sound which Owl City is known for; but builds on the lyrics and melodies which makes it a really simple and effect song- it's actually a lovely piece of work.

`Shy Violet' is hugely addictive as an ambient and electrified ballad-anthem; it's simple yet effective in its execution. Meanwhile `Deer in the Headlights' takes the title for the most ridiculously catchy and cheerful song- it's actually impossible not to dance a little bit to this track! Elsewhere, `Kamikaze' is an unusual track with some really great synth riffs in it- it takes on a more grown-up sound from his previous bodies of work, it's darker and more edgy and took a while to grow on me- but after a couple of listens I fully loved this track.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bright and Beautiful 18 July 2011
Format:Audio CD
Despite Owl City getting a lot of hate from some of the people I know I can't help but enjoy his music. The uplifting lyrics combined with the electronic sound create a wonderful set of songs to just chill out to. Now if you didn't like Owl City before, this album won't serve to change your mind. Some of the tracks bear striking resemblance to his previous songs. But if you already enjoyed their music like I did then this is defiantly worth a listen.

Out of all the tracks there's a few that stand out to me:

Deer In The Headlights - Probably my favourite song from the album, the melody is catchy and had me playing it over and over, the lyrics just had me smiling throughout.

Angels - Another great song with a good beat and very energetic and up-tempo.

Kamikaze - Catchy, different and a wonderful song to just chill out to, I rather enjoy the second voice playing over in the background adds an interesting appeal to the song especially with some good headphones on.

Shy Violet - Quite a soft song and I rather enjoy it, I loved the lyrics as per a lot of Owl Citys song make me feel happy when listening.

Of course these are just some of my favourites there all pretty good although a few tread familiar ground there still great for just chilling out, whether that be while out on a walk or just sitting in the back garden. I'm not the best at explaining why I enjoy music but this is the best I can do :) so if you enjoy songs that are uplifting with an electronic touch give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Owl City Album 2 Nov 2013
By Cloctor
Format:Audio CD
In my opinion, this is the best Album Adam Young has done. His music is lovely and makes me feel calm (yes I like that weird auto-tune xD) but it's also upbeat and the lyrics are inspirational. I can understand it's not everyone's type of music, but I love Owl City and this is a brilliant album.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pre-Teen Perfection 8 Jun 2012
Format:Audio CD
After the gigantic success of Owl City's 'Ocean Eyes', largely thanks to the phenomenal one hit wonder track 'Fireflies', the follow up would prove difficult to produce for anyone, even though the past album was incredibly mediocre. 'All Things Bright & Beautiful' proves the whole christian content theory true, with previous lyrics ripped straight from the bible. Its also sticking to the cheery theme where everything made of marshmallows, sparkling rainbows stain the sky and unicorns recite poetry.

"Reality is a lovely place but I wouldn't want to live there"
Adam Young's writing abilities clearly haven't broken any new ground or changed from his childish out there style. While the introduction is a breezy synth line in 'The Real World', Young's whispering voice bumbles a load of rhymes and occasionally differs in keys, prompting violent autotune jerks here and there. 'Deer in the Headlights' is my guilty pleasure, because although its lyrics are equally lame to the majority of Owl City songs ("Her pepper spray made it rather hard for me to walk her home" & "Its suffocating to say that the female mystique takes my breath away") The melody is irresistible and so upbeat its difficult cast out, the chorus is poppy and loved up but "Tell me again was it love at first sight, when I walked by and you caught my eye" is as strong as it gets and rightfully makes the song a 3rd bouncy single from the album. 'Angels' features a subtle glockenspiel intro spoiled by the nervous shouting "Wake me if you're out there" which reeks of tampering effects as if Young's voice broke halfway through recording. Theres almost nothing new here, as it flies through with the same special effects, lyrics and vocals that try to sound serious, getting louder occasionally.

It could be criticised as superficial but there is a joyousness and lightness to this popular music which could float from the bottom all but the heaviest of hearts.
