Haven fallen in love with Owl City a year ago after their success with `Fireflies' and their amazing album "Ocean Eyes", I was hugely looking forward to the release of this- his follow up album- "All Things Bright and Beautiful".
I wouldn't go as far as to say that this album matches the triumphant heights of "Ocean Eyes", but reading through reviews of this album, I certainly wouldn't be as critical as some of the reviewers have been- this album certainly doesn't far too far from the standards expected, and I think the previous albums have set an extremely high bar to reach again.
There are some amazing tracks on this album- `The Yacht Club' is a brilliant, pop anthem which literally sounds like it fell off of "Ocean Eyes" and is one of my favourites on the album, along with `Honey and the Bee' which strips back the sound which Owl City is known for; but builds on the lyrics and melodies which makes it a really simple and effect song- it's actually a lovely piece of work.
`Shy Violet' is hugely addictive as an ambient and electrified ballad-anthem; it's simple yet effective in its execution. Meanwhile `Deer in the Headlights' takes the title for the most ridiculously catchy and cheerful song- it's actually impossible not to dance a little bit to this track! Elsewhere, `Kamikaze' is an unusual track with some really great synth riffs in it- it takes on a more grown-up sound from his previous bodies of work, it's darker and more edgy and took a while to grow on me- but after a couple of listens I fully loved this track.
Lead singles `Alligator Skies' and `Galaxies' are both excellent indicators of where you can expect this album to head following "Ocean Eyes"- different, more grown up, but with the same innocent and catchy nu-wave styling's brought to us on previous albums- the latter of these two singles is actually of my favourite songs of the year- a true masterpiece!
As I said- if you're a fan of Owl City, don't worry too much about this album- it's a great piece of work filled with excellent tracks which you will fall in love with. For those ones which don't immediately catch you, give them a chance and few extra listens and you'll get there! This album is great and really enjoyable, Owl City once again hits the mark with an album filled with excellent and innocent lyrics, wonderful instrumentation and brilliant arrangements- it's addictive and makes for great listening!
