Product Description

BBC Review

On her fourth album, Gwyneth Herbert builds on the strengths that made her last release, Between Me And The Wardrobe, a success. Focussing on her folk-jazz vocal style and on her own compositions rather than cover versions, All The Ghosts should see her career continue on its recent upward trajectory.

Herbert's songs are rightly starting to draw comparisons with those of 60s Ray Davies and Paul McCartney. She has a fine sense of melody and her latest songs tell stories that equal ''Terry meets Julie, Waterloo station, every Friday night'' or ''Wednesday morning at five o'clock as the day begins''.

The songs create a cast of inner-city archetypes, each with an intriguing tale to tell. Many of the protagonists are society's losers or victims. Unlike Davies or McCartney, Herbert unfailingly sees the world from a woman's point of view. It is no coincidence that four of the track titles contain women's names.

Her voice and phrasing are often reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, noticeably on Nataliya. The elasticity of her voice perfectly conveys the songs' emotions and softens their occasional bleakness. Men are either objects of desire, as on My Narrow Man, or contempt, as on Put Your Mouth Where Your Money Is.

The accompaniment from pianist Steve Holness, bassist Sam Burgess, percussionist Dave Price and guitarist Al Cherry is subtly understated, complementing the voice well. Rarely in the limelight, the music impresses when it is featured. Cherry's acoustic guitar is the highlight of My Mini and Me, notably the slide guitar coda.

Previously available online in 2008 as a download-only album entitled Ten Lives, this expanded and retitled version is a coherent and compelling song suite. One of the added tracks comes as a surprise after the nine Herbert originals. Almost as an afterthought, the album closes with a raw version of Bowie's Rock 'n' Roll Suicide.

It seems an odd finale given Herbert's age. She was born years after Ziggy Stardust gave his last performance. Nonetheless, as on the original Bowie release, it brings this impressive album to a suitably emotional and rousing conclusion. --John Eyles

When I interviewed Gwyneth Herbert in 2004 just after the release of her first widely available album she seemed upset that she had lost control of the process, and had produced product that tried to constrain her within one style - and I felt the same later when Blue Note produced what I thought to be a laboured album which didn't really reflect her abilities and her talents. This album mostly recorded mostly at Box,near Bath goes a long way to redressing those difficulties and goes some way towards establishing her in her own niche. It helps that her band are obviously empathetic to what she was trying to achieve. The songs on this album also cover a wider range of topics and styles than either of the two previous major releases, and she doesn't deserve to be pigeonholed as a jazz singer, as this proves that there's much more to her performance than that. My two favourites from early listening are "Annie's Yellow Bag" and "Put your mouth where your money is". Probably also worth mentioning is Al Cherry's guitar playing, fluid and usually understated, and the keyboard work of Steve Holness, though Herbert herself plays on "My Narrow Man". Oh yes, and watch out for the David Bowie song cover.
Overall one that will grow on repeated listening and hopefully an indication that she might finally have found a direction and a sound that takes her where she wants to be going. Highly recommended!

This album is full of witty and catchy songs that you won't be able to get out of your head. Gwyneth Herbert is hugely talented, a great singer, a fine musician and a very inventive songwriter. Try and catch her live with her wonderful band.

I hadn't heard of singer/songwriter Gwyneth Herbert until recently. Went to her gig in North Devon last night. Amazing performance from her and her band - Sam Burgess, Al Cherry and Dave Price. Second half was devoted to "All the ghosts". It was easy to love all the tracks - a highly creative, imaginative, thoughtful and diverse range of songs. A class act. Catch her on tour if you can - you won't be disappointed.
