Product Description

CD Description

This is the soundtrack for David Essex's brand new musical All The Fun Of The Fair. David Essex began his career in the musical Godspell in 1971, before becoming one of the countries best loved pop stars, with hits such as "Gonna Make You a Star" and "Hold Me Close". As well as staring in Andrew Lloyd Weber's Evita he co-wrote and stared in the musical Mutiny! All The Fun Of The Fair, based on Essex's debut album of the same name, tells the story of funfair owner Levi Lee (played by Essex), who is coming to terms with the loss of his wife and the attentions of a newly divorced woman. He is also struggling to deal with his rebellious teenage son's tangled love and ambitions.Danger and mysticism lurk in the future, as predicted by a gypsy fortune teller if Levi changes his path. This moving story with a heartbreaking twist reaches out to every parent and anyone torn in love.

Every one a gem! 9 Oct 2008
By Jan T
Format:Audio CD
Including 3 number ones and several less familiar numbers, this compiliation is a must for any David Essex fan, even if, like myself, you've got all the tracks scattered on various other cd's.
These 19 original recordings (not a cast CD) could be mistaken for being written and recorded purely for the musical of the same name, (despite some numbers being over 30 years old), such is the ingenious way these songs have been chosen and integrated into the storyline!
This new musical gives these legendary and timeless classics a new lease of life.
Some of my personal favourites include 'Dangerous', 'Here We are Altogether', 'He Noticed Me', 'Pretty Thing', 'I'll Call Ya (She's Leaving Home)' and 'You're In My Heart', none of which were released as singles, but are now, through this album, reaching out to a wider audience.

'All The Fun of The Fair' was one of my favourite David Essex albums when I was a teenager. Now I'm in my fifties and I still love this album. Thank you Amazon.uk for finding this album for me. David Essex is still the best! All The Fun Of The Fair

Don't get me wrong, if you wanted a Best of David Essex CD, then this would have a 5 start rating, as there are some great songs in there.

My main gripe with this CD, is that I bought it in order to re-live the stage show which I'd seen, and thoroughly enjoyed, a few weeks earlier. However, apart from sharing the same tracks as those in the show, there is very little else relating to the show (except of course, the cover, which you don't get on a download !).

The songs are performed in a different order to the show, but the more serious problem is that they are not performed either by the characters who performed them in the show, or in the style of the show. On the whole, I believe they are the original David Essex recordings.

The classic example of this is the brilliant 'Winters Tale' Now I love the song, and I love David's rendition of it. But in the show it is brilliantly performed, in a very different context, by a female character, Rosa. In the stage performance Louise English makes it her own in a way that I wouldn't have believed possible.

So I wouldn't recommend this if you want to evoke memories of All the Fun of the Fair. Some of the fun ? Maybe.
