Biography

U2 formed in 1978 after Larry Mullen pinned a 'musicians wanted' ad to the notice board at Dublin's Temple Mount School. Adam Clayton had discovered rock'n'roll as a thirteen year old, buying his first acoustic guitar and then talking his parents into buying him a bass guitar. 'It just sounded good to me. Deep and fat and satisfying.'
From the beginning, U2 were ... Read more in Amazon's U2 Store

Product Description

If U2 hadn't used the title already, "A Sort Of Homecoming" might have suited this, their 10th studio album. All That You Can't Leave Behind sounds, at various points, like any or all of U2's previous albums, as if the band are sending postcards back from a protracted ramble through previously conquered territories. The euphoric first single, and opening track, "Beautiful Day", reintroduced Edge's signature delay-laden guitar solos, pretty much absent since The Unforgettable Fire. Elsewhere, the gospel stylings of Rattle & Hum resurface on "Stuck In A Moment", and the deranged, Prodigy-influenced dance textures that characterised their previous album, Pop, crop up on "Elevation". None of this should be taken as suggestion that this always commendably restless group are running out of ideas. Having spent the 1990s making three of the most bizarre and adventurous albums ever delivered by a stadium rock band (the consecutive masterpieces Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Pop), it's as if they are now trying to figure out if there was one particular thing they always did best. On the evidence presented here, it's that combination of U2's facility for the epic playing alongside Bono's increasing lyrical interest in intimacy: "Walk On" and "Peace On Earth" are two of the best things he has ever written or sung. All That You Can't Leave Behind confirms that U2's laurels are continuing to make them itch. --Andrew Mueller

this cd is really good. The problem with u2 is that we have come to expect too much. But even with the burden of this on their shoulders, they come up trumps.beautifull day 5 star- needs no introduction
stuck in a moment. an understated song that that has such a strong melody to it.4.5 stars
elevation. rock song with uplifting woo hoo's. 4 stars.
walk on. old skool (joshua tree-esque)great guitar riff. watch out for the end of the song it is extremely moving and beautifull, 5 star
kite, very moving and emotive slow burner, bono sings with a cool pasivity to his voice, 5 star.
in a little while, this song is a real gem,it sounds so spontanious and fresh,it is such a joyous song. it's as if bono just sag this out from his soul after a meeting with the girl of his dreams.beautifull song,5 star
wild honey, beetle-esque tune, it has a care-free elegece to it.
peace on earth. it sounds slghly formulaic and contrived, nevertheless the "jesus can u..." line really grabs your attention. 4 stars
when i look at the world. nice song, which contains the element of surprise so prevelent on joshua and actung.the misplaced guitar riff half way through the song gives chils down the spine.5 star
new york. captures the mood of the city with a cool urban base. good song to bang your head to and let out some rage!4.5star's
grace, dreamy song, reminiscent to "mothers of the dissappeared" off the joshua tree.4.5 star's
the ground beneath her feet. possibly the best track on the album(why it did'nt make the u.s release god only knows!)check out the spooky female backing vocals near the end of the track.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to Their Best 13 Nov 2002
Format:Audio CD
U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind is a magnificent album.
All the tracks are great, but the first five tracks in particular (Beautiful Day, Stuck in a Moment, Elevation, Walk On, Kite) are simply stunning, and prove that U2 are one of the greatest bands of all time.
This is U2 back to their best after a slight fall in the 90's, and I personally can't wait for their next album in Summer 2003.
This is a must-have album, truly brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect! 2 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
i don't have enough kind words to say. I've been a U2 fan for awhile and have always thought their music to be the best out there. Then along comes "ATYCLB". Unbelievably brilliant! This is a must-own cd. Starting with the euphoric "Beautiful Day" and ending with the spiritual and melodic "Grace", Bono and the band hit all the right notes. Particular standouts are "Stuck in a Moment", "Walk on", and "Peace On Earth". Playing major thesmes here are issues of death, isolation, and love, beautifully rendered in thought provoking lyrics and music. Bono finally gets the blues with "In a little While" and has some fun with "Wild Honey". Always spiritual, they shine in "When I look at the world". For U2 fans everywhere this album reconfirms their place in music history, and for those who aren't fans, it soon will do the same. Do yourself a favour and buy this album. It's worth the money a hundredfold.

Beautiful Day was the forerunner footprint of an album that was to arrive and from start to finish ATYCLB produces a topper each time.
Yeah, the lighter weight songs like Wild Honey will attract criticism because U2 are not allowed to put something like that out - snipers the world over will wait in the shadows for this and the next, and the next.... But take each track as it comes, dismiss you preconceptions of what it should be, what it should address etc and score this album on the mere fact that it is an album of outstanding musical content from first track to last.
Kite and Walk On are along the lines of what may be expected, Beautiful Day has been around to crawl under the skin of the doubters, In A Little While is outstanding almost in the vein of Sweetest Thing. New York, well for being bang up to date it still blends what U2 were doing in the October Album for the vocal strain of the chorus a la Rejoice etc!
U2 have been around and been justly elevated to their superstar status and all that brings (although they do no waste this - Jubilee 2000, Amnesty, etc)so the neutrals cannot elevate them any higher by singing this album's praises but what they can do is attempt to be contraversial and try to down a band that produce stuff edging brilliance.
Nobody likes U2. You love them. Ypu hate them. No middle ground. Those who hate are not content in doing just that, they feel they must justify and that smacks of people who have just been unnerved that they actually like what they've just listened to - which for them must scare the wits ot of them.
Act your age, listen to the album, like it for what you hear on the cd not in the media, your radiohead mate's opinion or what your preconceptions are - This JUSTIFIES CD PRICE INCREASES!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy

U2 just keep turning out the best music decade after decade. Thumping up tempo tunes mixed with haunting meloldys. Buy it. Preferably from Zoverstocks.

After 'Pop', one of the worst things U2 ever did, they returned with 'All That You Can't Leave Behind', a much less experimental affair with more traditional songs. Read more
