This is a superb compilation of three classic albums, any one of which would cost you more if bought separately. Don't be deceived by the fact that there's a total of only 25 tracks between the 2CDs, because both play for just under 80 minutes, giving the players the opportunity to stretch out and explore the music, which they do. There's not a dull moment here, unlike some of those extended essays in self-indulgence which get palmed off as jazz.
The 1955 recreations of the trio recordings from The Benny Goodman Story show Hamp, Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa in fine form, romping along through a set of standards they must have known inside out and back to front. The Giants album was recorded about the same time, with Art Tatum and Buddy Rich replacing Wilson and Krupa respectively, the addition of Harry Edison on trumpet and Barney Kessel on guitar, and the addition of a bass. The second CD largely features Hamp's big band performing in concert at the Apollo Hall in Amsterdam, where the excitement generated by a live performance is racked up by Hamp's flair for showmanship.
