So far, this series has been quite brilliant. As I type, there is only one episode to go and I am SO excited. If the last five are anything to go by, it will be a cracker!
I like watching tv and have watched more than a few series & dramas over the years - however, VERY few have ever grabbed me in the way this one has. This is addictive!
When I sat down to watch the first episode, I was a bit unsure about it for the first 40 mins or so - essentially we were getting the background that brought us up to where the story kicks in - but by the 45th minute things started to look up and by the end, I was well and truly hooked. Whoever would have thought that a series about a wronged wife (Sarah Lancashire), an errant husband (Neil Pearson), a home-wrecking floozy (Sarah Alexander) and a nice cute dude (Bryan Dick), which centred on a small town church choir, could turn out to be so brilliant?? Each episode since has been excellent. The storylines are well-written and cover the many aspects of every-day life. ALL the actors are perfect for their roles and the interaction is very good. Each episode focuses on a particular character(s) and you learn more about him/her/them but this is not to the exclusion of the other characters and so each episode is very rounded. There is comedy and there are tears. And quite often at the same time! Every episode ends on a high and you are ALWAYS left wanting more.
The muscial aspect of this series is very good and it is probably this that makes it so special. Despite the series being centred around a church and choirs, the music is not always what would normally be considered 'choral' and it is executed superbly. You may even be surprised to hear how well some of our well-known tv actors can sing.
Debbie Horsfield wrote the excellent 'Cutting It' series and she has excelled again with this one. I really hope there will be a second series. And a third.... And a fourth... :-)
By this item - you will enjoy it!!
