By Jason Parkes #1 HALL OF FAME
Format:Audio CD
'All Shook Down' is one of the key albums of the 1990's, influencing the fusion of country and rock that would become known as alt country (such bands as Uncle Tupelo and Whiskeytown; Wilco's The Lonely 1 is about 'Mats main man Paul Westerberg). The Replacements were one of the key bands from the 1980's, alongside Husker Du and REM (all signed to Warners strangely)- sadly this would be Westerberg & co's final release. Now seen as somewhat a cult band like Big Star and Uncle Tupelo, hopefully they will find a fresh audience. Westerberg was viewed as an icon, as books such as Demonology and Garden State (by Rick Moody) and films like Heathers make reference to him (the school in the Winona-classic is called Westerberg High!). This is one of Westerberg's finest, despite being a solo album in all but name, and ranks next to other highs: 1984's Let It Be (featuring the timeless existentialism of Unsatisfied) and 1998's Suicane Gratification.

Every track is wonderful, as great rock as 70's Stones or early T-Rex- songs like Merry Go Round, When It Began, Happy Town, Someone Take the Wheel and (especially) Bent Out of Shape capture the disintegrating Westerberg. John Cale guests on the gorgeous Sadly Beautful, the Dunlap/Stinson/Mars line-up play on Attitude and the ever dependable Benmont Tench guests (Mighty Like a Rose/Dust/Sheryl Crow). One Wink at a Time captures a humurous, therefore more scary state of damage (very Sister Lovers), while the sublime Nobody looks at failure. My Little Problem goes for soulful backing vocals, pre-empting the sound of Primal Scream on Give Out But Don't Give Up. Torture is a minimal guitar accompanied bruiser, while the title track recalls The Jesus & Mary Chain. Final song The Last sounds like a suicide note, Westerberg seemingly resigned to the end...

All Shook Down is one of the key albums of the 1990's , though hopefully it will be reissued remastered and with bonus cuts (and maybe liner notes by Westerberg?) to accompany the recent reissues of early Replacements. One of the greatest rock albums of all time, this is one that you won't be able to live without...

Sadly beautiful 18 April 2009
Format:Audio CD
Every time I listen to this record, which is frequently, I ask myself how this didn't become one of the biggest selling records of all time. It is filled with classics- 'Merry Go Round', 'Nobody', 'Sadly Beautiful', 'All Shook Down', 'Happy Town', 'My Little Problem', it is pure pleasure from beginning to end. I will never understand how Sire/Warners failed to promote this album and bring it its deserved audience. 'Please to Meet Me', their album of three years previous, was the nearest they got to a commercial break and as superb as that album is and as much as I love it, I think this album, sadly their last, is better, which is saying a great deal. Now remastered with bonus tracks, don't miss out second time round.

A fine rock and roll moment... 22 Oct 2004
By Dreamin' - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Some claim this to be Paul's first "solo" record. While others claim a final whimper from an incredible rock and roll band. When it's all said and done it's 13 more beautifully crafted Paul Westerberg songs. Listen to the words sung in "Nobody". Facing marriage and still flipping it the middle finger. The longing and desire for a woman in "Bent Out of Shape". The frightening "All Shook Down" which to me really describes what this band state of mind/shape it was in when this was recorded. Then to the final song on the record,"The Last". Total closure on a ten-year ride in rock and roll.

The great thing about Paul's songs is that you do not need to know what he was writing about or what his feelings are about a specific song or record. I truly believe more than any other rock band on this earth that no one has written songs where once you let them into your life those same songs when heard ten years later you still feel that same emotion that you first felt when it reached your ears.

It's amazing that this man, his band and his music fell through the cracks. The biggest crime of all is that not enough people were aware of a band in a decade of vapid pop and schlock heavy metal bands that all sounded the same and looked the same. A true original goes unnoticed again. Isn't that always the way.....

Do Not Dismiss This Abum... 15 Jun 2001
By Johnny Kazek - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
To dismiss this album as a "weak, Paul Westerberg solo project" is ignorant. I think it may be what he was trying to say all along, from "Sorry Ma" 'til the the end. How long did it take from the momement you heard anything by the 'Mats 'til you realized they were the reason you listened to Rock ' Roll? It wasn't instantaneous, but when it hit you, you knew. And you knew they were the band you were WAITING for. These songs sum up everything he was/is about: Longing for- acceptance, substance, and love, no matter the year or style, and no matter who you are or who the world perceives you to be. If you won, you will soon be a loser just like the rest of us; if you lost, who knows?, but you must stil be true to yourself...

Mat's swan song uncharacteristic but fine nonetheles 4 Aug 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The bad news is that All Shook Down is not truly a Replacements album. The great news is that it is a Paul Westerberg album. Many longtime Mats fans, already jaded by the glossy "Don't Tell A Soul", probably ran screaming when they heard the fine tunes on this effort.

Even though it ain't really the Mats, this CD has some of the best songwriting Paul has done. 'Sadly Beautiful' is an excellent tender ballad. 'Nobody' and 'One Wink at a Time' are also great songs. This CD also is a great example of Westerberg's evolution as a songwriter. Yes, these songs were written by the very same man who wrote "Customer", "Bastards of Young", and "Alex Chilton."

The album is quiet and introspective and very good if listened to in the right perspective. Give it a try, but spread the listening out between doses of the classic Replacements albums
