Product Description

Review
'A fast-moving mystery, a whodunit written with ease A remarkable book' New York Times 'Much more than a "hot book". It is splendid reading of enormous value a very human story' New Republic

Product Description
'The story read "Five men, one of whom said he is a former employee of the CIA, were arrested yesterday in what authorities described as an elaborate plot to bug the offices of the Democratic National Committee." The thought that the break-in might be the work of the Republicans seemed implausible'. When two reporters are assigned to cover what seems a routine burglary in the opulent Watergate building in downtown Washington, it becomes the first step in what must be the most devastating political detective story. This is Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's gripping story of how they uncovered a scandal that still reverberates throughout the world. It follows their first suspicions through the torturous trail of false leads, lies, secrecy and high-level pressure, to the final moments when they are able to put the pieces of the puzzle together and write the expose that wins them a Pulitzer Prize and leads to the downfall of the President of the United States, Richard Nixon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and compelling., 14 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I could not put this book down - one of the best detective stories I have ever read, based on actual events - outstanding. As a british reader who wasn't even born when these events took place, I found this book absolutely riveting and incredibly informative, and very well written considering the volume of detail it contains. Sincere thanks to the two authors for all their hard work to bring out the facts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, fascinating, but a bit technical at times., 25 Jan 1998
By A Customer
This book by the reporters who were in the midst of the Watergate scandal for quite a while, takes the reporter from the initial, seemingly meanless break in at Watergate, to the resignation of a president. I would recommend this book to someone who wants to know the details of Watergate, but this book is not "easy reading." The myriad of names can sometimes be confusing, but the end product is a great non-fiction mystery story. Very well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tle classic story of the power of tenacious journalism, 11 Sep 2001
By A Customer
I recommend this book to everyone.

You've probably seen the film but this book tells the full story of the 'buggers at the Watergate' including ex-CIA man E Howard Hunt and ex-FBI nutcase G Gordon Liddy. It would be funny if it wasn't so serious - it's probably the worst case of abuse of the democratic process ever recorded.

A paranoid Richard 'Tricky Dickie' Nixon sends 'The Plumbers' out to 'plug the leaks', only to be found out by two dedicated journalists at The Washington Post' who simply won't leave the story to die (aided by the still anonymous 'Deep Throat').

Unfortunately the tale ends with Nixon's resignation from office rather than his trip to St Quentin but this shouldn't spoil your enjoyment. READ IT.
